Platonic Season 2 Adds ‘SNL’ Alums Aidy Bryant, Beck Bennett, and Kyle Mooney

News, Platonic

Apple TV+’s Platonic aims to bring the laughs with Saturday Night Live alums Aidy Bryant, Beck Bennett, and Kyle Mooney joining the cast for Season 2.

Deadline exclusively reported that the three comedians have signed on for recurring roles for the show’s sophomore season. Collider confirmed there are no details about the trios’ characters yet.

The half-hour comedy — initially billed as a limited series — was renewed just five months after the Season 1 finale. Platonic Season 1 Episode 10, “When Will Met Sylvia,” saw the leads, Will (Seth Rogen) and Sylvia (Rose Byrne), rekindle their friendship once again.

Rogen, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Byrne, told The Hollywood Reporter of his hesitation towards a second season as they were filming the first one. “I’m not a count-your-eggs-before-they-hatch guy,” he stated.

“I really just wanted to see if we were happy with it when it came out—and if everyone else was happy with it,” Rogen added.

Not only were the producers happy with Platonic, but Apple TV+ as well. Matt Cherniss, head of programming for the streaming service, told THR that “global audiences have been charmed by the […] relatable friendship.”

Co-creators and real-life husband and wife Nick Stoller and Francesca Delbanco teased to Deadline that Will and Sylvia will remain at the titular status: platonic on Platonic Season 2.

The incoming additions understand the platonic relationship well among each other, having come up in the same generation on SNL.

Bryant began her decade on the sketch show in 2012, with Bennett and Mooney coming on the show the following year.

Bryant’s TV success continued for three seasons of Shrill, for which she served as co-creator, writer, and star. She also earned an Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Comedy for her portrayal of Annie Easton.

Bryant, Bennett, and Mooney will join Platonic‘s relatively small supporting cast, which includes Tre Hale, Carla Gallo, and Luke Macfarlane as Charlie, Sylvia’s husband.

Platonic Season 2 will stream on Apple TV+.
