Reviews

All good things must come to an end…until next season. Betty La Fea, The Story Continues Season 1 Episode 9, “Blanked Out Cassette,” and Betty La Fea, The Story Continues Season 1 Episode 10, “Don’t Blame It On The Beach,” end the season by starting new chapters.

Clearly, Prime Video gave the show’s production team confidence in its renewal potential because it doesn’t ever treat episode 10 like the ultimate end. Instead, these two episodes build on current storylines and add new wrinkles for the next season.

It’s a gamble that works because it’s been renewed, and now viewers cannot wait until Season 2.

The biggest thrill in “Blanked Out Cassette” and “Don’t Blame It On The Beach” comes in the evolution of Mila. Finally, she becomes the daughter Betty always deserved.

Jeff, Ignacio, and Mila’s love triangle is one of the biggest cliffhangers of Betty La Fea, The Story Continues Season 1. Naturally, Mila should focus all on Jeff, but it’s more complicated.

Jeff still has a girlfriend and her lingering feelings for Ignacio may set her back after her very empowering choice on “Blanked Out Cassette.”

Throughout Season 1, Mila’s behavior and attitude didn’t feel true to Betty’s genes. Betty has always been kind and caring, so it didn’t quite make sense that her daughter could be so casually cruel.

Additionally, though Armando has done terrible things in the past, he’s grown. Therefore, Mila’s habits seem unbelievable.

She didn’t resemble any of her parent’s current behavior.

Betty La Fea, The Story Continues rectifies the Mila issues by finally having her resemble Betty, not just in looks but heart as well.

Mila makes her mother proud quite a bit in the season finale episodes. Her most monumental moment is when she brings down Ignacio by exposing him.

The series tricks you into thinking that he can gaslight her, which makes the ultimate moment so satisfying.

Her next big moment comes when she finally learns about Armando’s cruel past to Betty. This development, however, shows some of Mila’s good and bad traits.

We see a lot of beautiful, kind moments between the mother and daughter, but we also see how Mila is still immature. Armando, like most humans, has evolved. He’s no longer the cruel man of his youth.

She doesn’t listen and rushes her parent’s divorce. It’s a childish move that ignores human complexity.

Despite Mila’s actions, it doesn’t seem quite over for Armando and Betty.

The biggest cliffhanger of “Don’t Blame It On The Beach” is whether Armando and Betty have divorced and the identity of the mystery guy.

The mystery man could be Armando, and based on Betty’s reaction to her new lover, it has to be Armando. Any other option doesn’t make sense.

Additionally, continuing their marriage brings the best source of conflict, especially since Mila is upset with him. This gives them a chance to try to repair their relationship in Season 2.

This makes sense now that the Betty and Mila tension seems over. Plus, Mila in a love triangle between sweet Jeff and diabolical Ignacio may make Armando have lots of input.

Betty La Fea, The Story Continues Season 1 has been a nice nostalgic hit but hasn’t completely justified in its return to the EcoModa and Betty world. However, the final two episodes of the season remind us of the wholesome and fun nature of the series.

That may be justice enough for its existence.

“Blanked Out Cassette” is really entertaining on all levels. It has mouth-drop moments, sweet scenes, and plenty of comedy. “Don’t Blame It On The Beach” isn’t as strong of an episode, but there is a reason why these episodes air in pairs. It helps bring the story together and ensures that no episode feels like filler.

Overall, Betty La Fea, The Story Continues isn’t perfect, but I am excited to see where it goes in future seasons.
