Mickey Down and Konrad Kay Talk ‘Industry’ Season 3, Favorite Moments, and More [Interview]

ATX Television Festival, Interviews

After a long two-year wait, the highly-anticipated third season of Industry, one of HBO’s most popular shows, is just around the corner. Get ready for more drama, intensity, and betrayal from TV’s sexiest bankers and traders.

I recently attended ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas, where I spoke with Industry co-creators Mickey Down and Konrad Kay about what fans can expect from the upcoming season, their favorite past moments, and more.

Down said Season 3 will include “a lot of raucous activity and an even more adrenalized version of the show, which is crazy given the first few seasons. It’s much more expansive, with more locations, a broader canvas, more people, and some really good new characters.”

“I mean, it’ll be up for people to see whether they think that’s the case, but we, as the creators, though, certainly feel like we left nothing on the table,” Kay added.

One of those brand-new characters is Sir Henry Muck, the CEO of an eco-friendly energy company, portrayed by Kit Harrington. Muck’s character will be one of the leading players to stir things up throughout the season, similar to Jesse Bloom from Season 2.

The finale of Season 2 saw Harper, portrayed by the powerhouse Myha’la Herrold, being fired from Pierpoint just when she thought she had gotten away with everything. It’s a pivotal moment in Harper’s character storyline, and it limits her possibilities after Pierpoint.

“It was like we wrote ourselves into a corner, and I feel that we had to make good on that ending,” Down said. “And I feel the way we’ve sort of fallen back into the storyline feels like that. Not to give too much away, but she has a really big season ahead, and she makes some decisions around her career that are quite Harper-ish. Self-interested.”

Industry Season 2 was also a defining season for Yasmin, played by the fabulous Marisa Abela. In stark contrast to how her character acted in Season 1, Yasmin began putting her foot down in multiple areas of work, standing up for herself, and owning her sexuality.

When prompted if we could see the potential for Yasmin to become an anti-hero alongside Harper, Kay exclaimed his love for working with Myha’la and Marisa, two incredible powerhouse actresses.

“The more we wrote for them, the more we figured out what they can do. I wouldn’t say she [Yasmin] does a complete 180 in Season Three, but I think Marisa really gets to showcase some of the extent of her range and talent,” Kay said.

The two also revealed on the red carpet that the Season 3 finale is one they’re looking forward to because they got to co-direct, and HBO approved an extended runtime to make it feature-length.

Plus, fans will want to keep an eye on Season 3 Episode 4, as a fan-favorite character will get their very own showcase.

Down says one of his favorite moments of past seasons is the Season 2 finale because of how surprising it was to both of them.

“It felt unexpected to us when we were writing it. We thought, god, people are going to see this coming from a mile away, but the reactions surprised us otherwise, and it was satisfying,” said Down.

“We quite like the trading sequences because they feel a bit like we’re making a sports movie, even though they’re just saying this insane jargon,” Kay continued. “Robert eating his own semen off the mirror was quite a big moment. It’d be weird if that weren’t because, as creators, it’s one of our favorite moments.”

“There’s a slight callback to that in Season 3 as well,” Down added.
