Holly Hunter to Lead ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Series on Paramount+

Emmy and Academy Award winner Holly Hunter will star in the upcoming original series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on Paramount+.

Hunter will star as the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy in the all-new series that is set to begin production later this summer.

Produced by CBS Studios, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy “introduces viewers to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism,” per its synopsis.

“Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.”

Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau serve as co-showrunners and executive produce Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

“It feels like we’ve spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be a stone-cold genius,” Kurtzman and Landau said in a joint statement.

“To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor, and across the board brilliance leading the charge on Starfleet Academy is a gift to all of us, and to the enduring legacy of Star Trek,” they added.

Hunter’s TV credits include her performance as Ellen Russell in 1989’s TV movie Roe vs. Wade on NBC, for which Hunter won the Emmy Award for Oustanding Lead Actress in a Mini Series or Special.

Hunter won the same award for her turn as Wanda Holloway in HBO’s The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom in 1993. Hunter also received Emmy nominations for her role on Saving Grace.

More recently, Holly Hunter guest-starred as Rhea Jarrell on HBO’s Succession.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy — her latest venture — joins the expanding Star Trek franchise on Paramount+.

The upcoming series will be among the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 and the recently-renewed Season 4, the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, and the original movie event Star Trek: Section 31 starring Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is executive produced by Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber.
