The Equalizer Season 4 Episode 5 Review: The Whistleblower

Reviews

The Equalizer Season 4 Episode 5, “The Whistleblower,” proves how the show can tell multiple stories on one episode without sacrificing details or characters’ screen time.

With Mel’s brothers at the center of the action, we still learn more about Aunt Vi’s relationship with Trish and the issues Dante keeps having with his father. Not one story becomes more important than the other; they are all relevant to the show’s timeline.

While the personal stories become quite important, the show doesn’t lose its essence. The action scenes are still heavily charged, keeping viewers entertained.

One of the biggest plotlines on The Equalizer has always been how difficult it is for Robyn to keep her job a secret. Even though during the first season, only she, Mel, and Harry kept the secret, later on, Aunt Vi and Delilah became accomplices as well.

During The Equalizer Season 4’s first few episodes, Delilah struggled with the secret. She wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps and have a similar career while simultaneously fighting bullies at school.

But this time, Aunt Vi must deal with the heaviness of the secret.

Even though Aunt Vi and Trish have been an item for a while, we hadn’t seen much of Trish this season as Aunt Vi continued to make up excuses every time they had a date because she had to cover for Robyn. That backfires on her on “The Whistleblower.”

When Trish starts asking questions about Robyn’s charity and the amount of traveling she does for work, we can tell something isn’t right. Our instincts as viewers tell us two things that could happen. The first one is that Trish is working for someone who wants intel on Robyn.

The second one is that Trish isn’t happy with the secrets and excuses Aunt Vi keeps throwing her way. That is confirmed when Trish says she doesn’t feel Aunt Vi is being honest with her. Robyn’s secret has become a burden.

The tension between Aunt Vi and Trish and Delilah’s issues at school are two triggers on the episode that tell us something big is coming.

Robyn promises she will find a way to solve this, but how real can this be? The only way to solve the issue between Aunt Vi and Trish is to tell the truth. However, doing so would put both Trish and Robyn at risk.

As for Delilah’s troubles with bullies, Robyn cannot tell her classmates what she does without jeopardizing everyone’s safety. The only way Delilah would have a normal childhood would be if Robyn stopped equalizing.

If that were to happen, there would no longer be a show.

However, these two instances aren’t the only ones that give viewers the feeling that terrible things may happen for both Robyn and Dante.

On the one hand, the CIA is coming for Robyn. Even though we know she had nothing to do with Michelle’s escape, it seems the company is blaming her. On “The Whistleblower,” the CIA director accuses her of having helped Michelle.

Fisk, who initially didn’t trust Robyn, is letting her know that an internal investigation is underway into Michelle’s case.

When Robyn walks into Diana’s office, and a camera is recording them, we know the situation will be turned against her. This is further confirmed when Diana refuses to tell Robyn, who is watching from the other side.

Even though Fisk isn’t able to tell Robyn what exactly is going on with the special council looking into them, he does tell her a storm is coming. This tells us the CIA will definitely come after Robyn.

So, on top of having to find a way to help Aunt Vi and Delilah, Robyn will probably have to find a way to get the CIA off her back.

Throughout The Equalizer Season 4, there have been hints about Dante’s issues with his father. His father has mainly asked Dante to spend unsupervised time with his grandchildren.

This happens again on The Equalizer Season 4 Episode 5, “The Whistleblower,” when he asks Dante to take the children to a baseball game that night without Dante. Reluctantly, Dante agrees, but of course, he is disappointed.

His father doesn’t show up and gives Dante no explanation for his disappearance. However, as viewers, we see him sitting at a bar and someone approaching him. We don’t see the person who approaches him, but it is not for a good cause.

Given his criminal past, we can assume someone he knew before his arrest is returning to his life. Whatever the case, this will definitely be a problem for Dante.

This probably means that Dante and Robyn’s promise to go out for drinks will remain on pause as they both navigate the different issues in their personal and professional lives.
