Preview — Star Trek: Discovery Season 5: Captain Burnham and Crew Set Off on One Final Mission
It’s the end of an era. Star Trek: Discovery, the series that brought Gene Roddenberry’s popular franchise back to television and launched a universe of new Star Trek series that’s still going strong, will head out on its final mission this April.
The ten-episode fifth season will follow Captain Michael Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery on one last adventure, uncovering a mystery that will send them on a quest across the galaxy to hunt an alien treasure and face dangerous threats along the way.
Like several Star Trek series before it, Discovery took some time to find its footing, starting life as a bleak prequel story about the Klingon War before becoming a blatant nostalgia fest during its second season (which, thankfully, introduced several of the major characters whose stories we now follow on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds).
By the time the show reached its third season — and transported its cast and story several centuries into the future — it thankfully found its voice as a sort of optimistic, futuristic adventure show, introducing new characters and alien cultures while giving us a glimpse of the way that familiar races like the Vulcans had changed in the centuries that had passed.
Season 5 will have to deal with a few outstanding plots from the show’s last outing — including what will happen to Book and Burnham’s relationship and his punishment for the light treason he committed last season and the future Keplian Saru and Vulacan T’rina’s romance interspecies romance.
But, for the most part, the final season feels wide open, which means almost anything can happen.

Season 5 description: The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery finds Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well … dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.
