ER’s Noah Wyle and John Wells Reteam for Medical Drama ‘The Pitt’ on Max

The Pitt, a new medical drama starring Noah Wyle, has received a straight-to-series order at Max.

The series comes from John Wells Production and Warner Bros. Television, where JWP is under an overall deal. R. Scott Gemmill (NCIS: Los Angeles, ER, JAG) will serve as showrunner. 

Max gave The Pitt, “a realistic examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today’s America as seen through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a modern-day hospital in Pittsburgh,” a 15-episode order.

Gemmill served as an executive producer on over half of ER‘s 331 episodes across its 15 seasons on NBC from 1994 to 2015. Wyle starred as Dr. John Carter on the second-longest-running medical drama.

ER now ranks behind Grey’s Anatomy, which is airing its 20th season).

“We are grateful to Warner Bros. Television and Max for giving us this opportunity to return to the world of urban medicine,” executive producers Scott Gemmill, Noah Wyle, and John Wells said in a statement.

“The myriad of challenges facing the doctors, nurses, technicians, patients, and their families who work in the trenches of modern medicine have become only more pronounced in the decade and a half since we last visited their stories,” the trio continued.

Head of Max Original Programming, Sarah Aubrey, expressed excitement about The Pitt coming to Max. “Collaborating with the visionary talents of John Wells, R. Scott Gemmill, and Noah Wyle to develop this new series has already been an exhilarating process,” Aubrey said.

“Their passion, creativity, and dedication to storytelling elevate every aspect of the project, and together, we’re poised to deliver a compelling and authentic portrayal of today’s medical world that will captivate audiences and leave a lasting impact,” Aubrey added.

R. Scott Gemmill will write The Pitt‘s first episode.

Gemmill, Wyle, Wells (Animal Kingdom, Shameless, The West Wing, ER), JWP’s Erin Jontow, Simran Baidwan, and Michael Hissrich will executive produce the series.
