True Detective Renewed for Season 5 at HBO

True Detective has been renewed for a fifth season on HBO.

This news comes days after its fourth season concluded with True Detective: Night Country Season 4 Episode 6, “Part 6,” aired on Sunday, February 18, on HBO. 

The renewal also comes alongside showrunner Issa López’s new multiyear overall deal with HBO, where López will create content exclusive to HBO and Max, including True Detective Season 5. 

“From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” López stated.

“HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca, and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again,” López continued.

“Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit,” Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said.

“She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera,” Orsi added.

“Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family,” Orsi concluded.

True Detective‘s fourth season, which takes place in Ennis, Alaska, premiered with True Detective: Night Country Season 4 Episode 1, “Part 1,” on Sunday, January 13, on HBO.

To solve the case of when eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace, “detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice,” per the season’s synopsis.

True Detective: Night Country starred Jodie Foster, Kali Reis, Finn Bennett, and Fiona Shaw, with Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc, and John Hawkes. The season’s guest stars included Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, and Joel D. Montgrand.

True Detective Season 4 is the show’s most-watched season, with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, per HBO.

Issa López is the showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer of True Detective: Night Country. 

Jodie Foster, Mari Jo Winkler; Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, and Mark Ceryak for PASTEL; Chris Mundy, Alan Page Arriaga, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Cary Joji Fukunaga, and Nic Pizzolatto executive produce the series.
