La Brea Season 3 Episode 5 Review: The Road Home, Part 1

La Brea, Reviews

La Brea Season 3 Episode 5, “The Road Home, Part 1,” proves once more that the show has always been about family—the family you’re born into and the one you make along the way.

Sadly for this family, it is time to mourn yet another one of their own. Levi’s road comes to an end, but not without first making us doubt his true intentions.

La Brea Season 3 Episode 5, “The Road Home, Part 1,” is a rollercoaster of traitors, truths, and betrayals.

Ever since she captured Scott on La Brea Season 3 Episode 4, “Fire Storm,” we have known Maya is not to be trusted. However, La Brea Season 3 Episode 5, “The Road Home, Part 1,” proves she is in charge of the entire operation.

The fact that Maya keeps showing up at the right (or wrong time) makes everyone suspicious of her motives.

Just like the audience had realized on the previous episode, the characters come to realize she is the bad guy. It becomes particularly obvious to them when she shows up right after the chat on the computer disappears.

It doesn’t help her case that she continues to push for Gavin to trade the microchip for Eve.

It isn’t until Gavin’s sister shows up that suspicions are confirmed. She tells them Maya is in charge of everything. She is absolutely the biggest traitor.

But, sadly, she’s not the only one.

Could it be Levi?

Since his return to 10,000 B.C. and destroying everyone’s way back home, Levi’s true intentions have been questioned. Is he good, or is he just pretending?

When Maya shows up at the base, and they introduce her to the man in charge of Scott’s interrogation, we’re surprised (but not really) to see Levi.

As La Brea has us used to, things aren’t always what they seem. Levi is a double agent working undercover at the military base to help his friends.

But even if that’s what he says, it is his actions that prove he has always tried to help his family. He gives his life to make sure Gavin can find Eve.

And because La Brea has always been about family, Levi and Gavin share one final emotional moment in which they promise to be brothers until the end.

Sadly, Levi’s end comes seconds after that, and we have to say goodbye to one of the show’s most important characters.

Is it Ruth?

La Brea Season 3 Episode 5, “The Road Home, Part 1,” keeps us on our toes, wondering who we can trust and who we must keep an eye on. That is exactly what the characters must do, too.

When Veronica finds a radio in the council’s headquarters, we immediately begin to suspect Ruth. The editing of the episode with closeups of Ruth’s face, her deciding to take a break from the council, and Veronica not being able to find her are all clues that make us wonder if Ruth is the traitor.

However, our suspicions immediately change from mother to daughter. Leyla is eager to show Izzy the way she has found for the two of them to live together.

It all makes it seem as if Leyla is the one we should be afraid of, and something will happen involving the military. This is further confirmed when Ruth says, “I’m responsible,” and just like Veronica, we know she’s covering for someone.

In the end, it is Leyla who has betrayed both the clearing people and the village people. She is so desperate to get away that she forgets what is important: family.

But it is thanks to her betrayal and access to the military radio that they’re able to save Gavin, Ty, Sam, and Helena.

It’s Always Been About Family

Ty and Gavin are both worried for their partners and willing to do whatever it takes to find them.

Sam and Gavin have desperately been trying to find their children in 1965.

Helena feels betrayed by Gavin because he let her take the fall for stealing the microchip.

Lucas is upset that Scott has been taken and wants to find him.

All these storylines have one thing in common: family. They are all trying to protect one another and the bond they share because no matter what has happened, family has always been the most important thing.

Now that La Brea is closer to the end, the biggest thing is that they all make it back together, that the family they created in 10,000 B.C. gets the happy ending it deserves.

Once again, however, the family is being separated. Gavin, Sam, and Izzy are on their way to 1965 to find Riley and Josh and destroy Maya’s operation.

Will they make it back to their 10,000 B.C. family in order to get back home together?

What happens when they ruin Maya’s plans? Does that put an end to their return home?

Hopefully, the final episode of La Brea will answer these questions without us having to mourn the loss of any more characters.
