La Brea Season 3 Episode 2 Review: Don’t Look Up

La Brea, Reviews

As if things weren’t already complicated enough, pterodactyls show up on La Brea Season 3 Episode 2, “Don’t Look Up,” pushing those from the clearing and the village to either keep fighting one another or work together to stay safe.

The first two episodes of La Brea Season 3 have proven that bringing two very different communities together can be a difficult task. How can they co-exist when they don’t see eye-to-eye?

It is clear that with the dangers that surround them, they will have to set their differences aside if they want to survive.

There is one instance on La Brea Season 3 Episode 2, “Don’t Look Up,” that shows exactly how hard it is for these two communities to co-exist. They have allowed them to stay in the village simply because of Paara and Ty’s relationship, but that doesn’t mean they will accept them.

When Izzy is practicing with the bow and arrow, Leyla fights her to get her equipment back. She doesn’t believe Izzy has what it takes to be a warrior.

Turns out Leyla is the daughter of the woman in charge while Paara is gone. Her and Izzy represent two very powerful individuals in each of their communities.

Them not seeing eye-to-eye is the best example of how these two groups have been clashing.

However, it seems they have more in common than they think as they both have had to follow their parents’ steps to get to where they are. Hopefully, we will see more of these two young women interacting.

While Izzy and Leyla have their own disagreements, the rest of the people from the clearing are trying to keep their head down and do the work to be accepted. This doesn’t always turn out the way they want to.

As the people from the village are trying to keep their distance and shutting them down, those from the clearing realize the village is their life raft. Without them, they’d be out in the wild hiding from dinosaurs and all sorts of dangers.

The scenes in which both groups are seen in common areas but keeping to themselves is the best representation of this. The village people on one side and the clearing people on the other.

There is a clear division between both groups that needs to be fixed if they want to survive.

On La Brea everything happens for a reason, every danger has a purpose, and that is why the pterodactyls show up.

On the surfface, as Scott discovers, the pterodactyls have shown up because they are laying their eggs on the land. But if you take a closer look at what their appearance means for the show, you’ll realize it goes beyond that.

These dinosaurs, this new danger, is the motor that pushes the village people and the clearing people to work together. While the first group is the strength and does the physical fighting, the second group acts behind the scenes to get rid of these dinosaurs.

It is only by combining their strong suits that they will be able to survive and save their home.

Once the pterodactyls are gone, both communities are seen interacting, eating together, and chatting away. This scene is an excellent contrast to earlier on the episode when they are on opposite sides of the village.

It is one step towards the communities adjusting, blending, and living in peace together.

The pterodactyls start doing spirals on the ground and at first Scott reveals that in some cultures spirals mean return or journey.

As viewers, we can connect these spirals and their meaning of return or journey to La Brea coming to an end and the characters hopefully returning to their own time.

Since the very beginning, the show has been full of symbols and clues as to what’s to come. Even though dinosaurs are an imminent danger, they give us hope that the symbols they bring with them will mean the safe return of our characters to where they belong.

The fact that the spirals end up being where they lay their eggs and they settle down, only gives us further hope that it represents the home they are all longing for, where they want to go back.

While the clearing people must learn to live in the village, Ty must find a way to get the version of his friends from 2021 to trust him enough to help him get their people home.

One of the most interesting parts of this storyline is seeing Jon Seda and Eoin Macken playing two versions of their characters. A version that hasn’t changed yet and is still struggling with the issues they were able to overcome while in 10,000 B.C.

Will they be able to put those issues aside to help Ty and bring everyone home?
