Ghosts, Reviews

Ghosts UK Season 2 Episode 6, “Bump in the Night,” embraces the thrilling action of a Button House break-in.

Removing Alison from the plot so Mike and the ghosts are forced to learn how to coexist in their spooky old mansion is plot gold. The burglars ransacking the house and forcing them into further panic? Even better.

This concept thrives in the buffoonery as both Mike and the ghosts constantly (and hilariously) crumble under the pressure of stopping a crime.

For once, Mike’s complete lack of survival skills hits all the right notes.

He starts strong by immediately falling asleep despite the ice cream in his lap and his irrational fear that the ghosts are watching him. When, in fact, they were hosting a song club downstairs — because, of course, they are.

Mike’s performance hits its stride when he awakes to a blinking doll and hides in the wardrobe to call his ghost whisper wife. I appreciate that the episode doesn’t entirely cut Mike off from Alison. The pure joy of learning she can hear the ghosts over the phone is worth sidelining Mike temporarily.

Amidst all the fun, Mike’s goofy persona shines in this dark hour as he develops valuable comradery with the spirits through their equally goofy parlor tricks.

He gets his big Die Hard moment with a bad guy headcount and a brief victory as Button House’s knight in shining armor.

Pressuring the ghosts to work with Mike because they have exhausted all other options — including the Plaque Girl — is a flawless use of this intense external conflict.

It also compels the ghosts to work together as one cohesive unit for the whole episode without splitting up, doubling down on their loveable banter in full force.

Their problem-solving skills are almost as chaotic as Mike’s. Highlights include using a creepy doll’s eyes to send Mike Morse code messages and Julian’s misleading mirror messages. With every attempt to help, they send this robbery deeper into a decent of chaos, and what is not to love about that?

Personally, more crimes should be committed at Button House if it means more of this elevated spirits on steroids dysfunction.

This action-packed episode showcases two of its finest ghosts in fun ways.

Lady Button’s turn to the dark side is a hoot and proof she could be the mastermind of this household if she cared to dethrone her disciples. Watching her orchestrate a better crime in real time as she criticizes the robbers’ technique is a far better elevation of her nagging persona.

Ghosts UK also reminds us what spirit we should never take for a fool, as Robin comes to Alison’s rescue.

The lead-up to him calling the dogs is heart-pounding and mysterious. His sudden sprint into action also prompts the Captain to yell, “I could have you shot for that,” right next to poor Thomas.

Alison looking over her neighbor’s shoulder to verbally thank Robin in front of everyone is a sweet moment to cap off this episode, too.

This episode folds in multiple attempts to stop the robbery with equal amounts of heightened hilarity and compelling action.

Alison’s attempts to race home amplify the urgency of this outing. Between accidentally bumping into a hitchhiking ghost and voluntarily catching a lift with a drunk bachelorette party, her journey home is equally as eventful as Mike’s night in.

Personally, the core cast thrives so well in this chaotic, crime-filled conflict that we could have cut down on the solo scenes with the robbers and spent that time with the ensemble instead.

Ultimately, “Bump in the Night” proves Alison should leave Button House unsupervised more often.
