Andrew Scott Is Tom Ripley in ‘Ripley’ Teaser Trailer

News

Andrew Scott is Tom Ripley in Netflix’s limited series Ripley.

Based on Patricia Highsmith’s bestselling novels that also inspired the film The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), the dramatic thriller follows the titular “grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York,” per its synopsis. Netflix shared the one-minute teaser trailer on X (formerly Twitter) after weeks of teasing Scott in the role.

Written and directed by Academy Award-winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley premieres on Thursday, April 4, on Netflix.

The new footage shows how Ripley “is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home. Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud, and murder.”

The titular character is described as “a very hard man to find” because he has no address, phone, or office. The black-and-white footage reveals glimpses at Ripley’s adventures on trains and boats, swapping out passport photos with Dickie Greenleaf, and more.

However, the biggest question that looms over Ripley‘s brief trailer is “Who is Tom Ripley?”

The answers lie in the eight-episode limited series that debuts on Netflix later this year. TV Line reports that Showtime developed Ripley before it moved to the streaming service last year.

Ripley also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, “the wealthy loafer who Ripley is attempting to lure home,” and Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, “Dickie’s girlfriend, who suspects darker motives underlie Tom’s affability,” per Netflix’s TUDUM. The cast also includes John Malkovich.

To Marge’s point, the teaser trailer doesn’t reveal Ripley’s intentions for the glass ashtray.

Showtime and Endemol Shine North America, in association with Entertainment 360 and Filmright, co-produce the show.

Steven Zaillian, Garrett Basch, Clayton Townsend, Guymon Casady, Ben Forkner, Sharon Levy and Philipp Keel of Diogenes executive produce. Andrew Scott also serves as a producer on Ripley.
