What to Watch on TV: Fellow Travelers, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and Extended Family

Welcome to a new week and another round of What to Watch on TV for the week of December 17th! Our picks this week include some highly-anticipated premieres, fun new episodes, bittersweet finales, and holiday movies.

Dial S for Santa – Sunday, December 17th

Lana Lawton, an insurance investigator, returns home for Christmas to spend time with her mom and cheer up her nephew, but when she arrives, she discovers there have been a string of robberies along Main Street. Looking for a promotion, Lana wants to take on the case and has to convince the police chief, Nick, to let her be involved. Dial S for Santa premieres Sunday, December 7th at 7/6c on UPtv.

Movie Description: When insurance investigator Lana Lawton returns home Christmas, her only goal is to spend time with her mom and cheer up her nephew who is upset that his military father won’t make it home for Christmas. When she arrives, however, she discovers that a string of robberies along Main Street has the shop owners scratching their heads over who could have done it. Seeing her chance to earn a big promotion by doing some real P.I. work, Lana puts all of her efforts into trying to solve the case by any means necessary. Now, with Christmas Eve approaching and her suspect list narrowing, Lana must convince Nick, the police chief, to let her help on the investigation. As the pair start spending more and more time together on the case, they begin to see each other as more than co-investigators. Can Lana and Nick solve the case in time for Christmas and will Lana’s lead suspect disappear on Christmas even with a sleigh full of stolen goods? It may just take a lot of faith and a good bit of Christmas magic for a happily ever after!

The Gilded Age – Sunday, December 17th

Peggy starts to question her future at The New York Globe while Rhijn’s staff questions their future at the house. Meanwhile, Marian confesses her true feelings and the opera war reaches a head. The Gilded Age finale airs Sunday, December 17th on Max.

Fellow Travelers – Sunday, December 17th

As the two attend the funeral of Senator McCarthy in 1957, Hawk and Tim try desperately to find a way to stay together. Meanwhile, in 1986, Tim makes a decision that will change Hawk’s life forever, as the older man looks toward gaining redemption for his mistakes. Fellow Travelers finale airs Sunday, December 17th at 9/8c on Showtime.

Episode Description: In 1957, Hawk and Tim reunite at Senator McCarthy’s funeral and try, one last time, to find a way to be together; in San Francisco, in 1986, Hawk seeks redemption as Tim makes a wrenching decision that will change Hawk’s life forever.

A Murder at the End of the World – Tuesday, December 19th

In one final, thrilling episode, the group of guests who remain come together in order to discover who the killer is among them. A Murder at the End of the World airs Tuesday, December 19th on Hulu.

Fargo – Tuesday, December 19th

Percy Jackson and the Olympians – Wednesday, December 20th

Percy Jackson finds out he is a demigod and almost immediately has to deal with Zeus accusing him of stealing his master lightning bolt. This 12-year-old is joined by his friends, Annabeth and Grover, to find the true culprit and clear his name. Percy Jackson and the Olympians premieres Wednesday, December 20th on Disney+.

Series Description: 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, is coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god, Zeus, accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt; with his friend’s help, Percy must restore order to Olympus.

Bookie – Thursday, December 21st

Sandra tells Danny he has to go legit, or he will lose her after Danny goes through a violent showdown. Looking for answers, Danny turns to a questionable source for advice. Bookie airs Thursday, December 21st on Max.

Dr. Death – Thursday, December 21st

With an all-new season comes an all-new doctor. Season 2 follows the thrilling tale of Paolo Macchiarini, known as the “Miracle Man” due to his innovative procedures. Dr. Death premieres Thursday, December 21st on Peacock. 

Season Description: In Season 2, Dr. Death will adapt the storyline from the podcast’s recent third season, which revolves around the crimes of charismatic surgeon Paolo Macchiarini, also known as the “Miracle Man.” Renowned for his innovative procedures, Macchiarini intrigues an investigative journalist keen to interview him.

Julia – Thursday, December 21st

When accused of un-American conduct, Julia uses her wartime espionage experience to keep her and her crew safe. Julia finale airs Thursday, December 21st on Max.

What If…? – Friday, December 22nd

In the latest envisioning of the Marvel universe, Nebula becomes part of the intergalactic police force to escape her father’s shadow. What If…? premieres Friday, December 22nd on Disney+, with a new episode releasing every day for nine days.

Episode Description: The premiere episode envisions a world where Ronan deposes Thanos long before the events of Infinity War with Nebula becoming a member of the intergalactic police force and desperate to escape her father’s shadow, [as] she sets out to prove her detective chops.

Extended Family – Saturday, December 23rd

Donald Faison and Jon Cryer team up as the current fiancé, Trey, and the ex-husband, Jim, to Abigail Spencer’s Julia, in an all-new family dynamic. The three somehow make it work as they navigate the ins and outs of life, love, parenting, and more. Extended Family premieres Saturday, December 23rd at 8/7c on NBC.

Series Description: Jim and his ex-wife, Julia, describe the day they got divorced as the happiest day of their lives, as they are still close friends and committed co-parents to their two children. Night Court – Saturday, December 23rd

The next season of this rebooted classic opens at Christmastime. Abby and Dan work to track down a little girl’s letter to Santa while Olivia is haunted by a witness who believes she is the Ghost of Christmas Present. Night Court premieres Saturday, December 23rd at 8:30/7:30c on NBC.
