Ghosts UK Season 2 Episode 2 Review: About Last Night

Ghosts UK Season 2 Episode 2, “About Last Night,” confirms Alison and Mike throw one hell of a party.

Amid their hangover the next day, the couple craft a perfectly paced mystery that pieces together their historic rave one horrifying flashback at a time.

Sam and Jay toyed with a similar concept on Ghosts Season 2 Episode 5, “Halloween 2: The Ghost of Hetty’s Past.” However, the episode hinged on their Halloween party not being a success. However, exploring the aftermath of a party that goes too well is almost more thrilling.

It is fitting that the episode toting such an epic party would find a way to incorporate the entire ensemble into the festivities.

There isn’t a corner of Button House left undisturbed by this rager. Mike has his own demons to fight after losing his voice beatboxing and throwing all his shoes onto the roof. Meanwhile, Alison is haunted by a missing dog and flirting with Thomas — all of which is as chaotic and fun as it sounds.

It gives our two leads some excellent material to work with as alcohol-induced war flashbacks personally victimize them.

However, the party also disrupts the dynamics between the core ghosts and even the plaque ghosts. All while drawing from pre-established foils.

The paced flashbacks lend themselves well to this mystery, particularly regarding Robin and Mary’s flirtmance.

Until now, there’s been no indication these two have any relationship, let alone a romantic one. No romantic dynamics between the ghosts have been explored yet. And that makes this reveal all the more juicy.

It starts subtly, too, with lingering glances and a particularly steamy “Hey” from Robin when he makes eyes at Mary.

Piecing together how this insane pairing came to be allows us to grow even more invested in the ongoing drama. Watching Mary and Robin unnecessarily insult each other at every turn is almost as fun as their kissing attempts.

Their best work comes when Captain accidentally catches them flirting and asks, “What’s going on?” to which they reply, “You are.” The confusion, followed by a violent cut away, has me cackling. Whatever is going on between these two, it is chaos, and we need more.

Perfect Party Pairings

Every single one of this episode’s pairings really pops off, so why stop at Robin and Mary?

First, having Julian offer to mediate the plaque ghosts’ dispute is so painfully in character. Of course, he would be horrible at mediation and terrific at being the bad guy everyone rallies against.

We continue to see Ghosts UK incorporate Thomas into the larger ensemble, but it’s a risk that pays off big time to have him follow Alison amid Mike’s disappearance. Her admission to finding Thomas attractive to consider something with him in another life is a powder keg of conflict ready to go off.

Finally, Pat and Thomas demonstrating their best jigs and janty little dances for the group to the most unhinged songs is perfection.

A Night to Remember

This episode doesn’t bother concerning itself with the aftermath of the wedding planner showing up, and it doesn’t have to with such an excellent plot already winding down.

Ghosts UK fixes its conflict issue by dividing the ensemble into pairs, drawing out various separate and meaningful disagreements.

All while uniting them under one quest to find Lady Button’s dog before her wrath finds them. The urgency and authenticity of each plotline can be felt.

We desperately needed to see what this series could do with nothing holding it back, and “About Last Night” more than accomplishes that with a night we won’t soon forget.
