Preview – May December: A Villain’s Tale
Note: This is an early preview of May December from a screening at the Chicago International Film Festival.
May December is one of those rare movies about villains. Not antiheroes but pure villainy. Based on the story of Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau, May December uses dark comedy and drama to showcase two very narcissistic and self-interested women.
It showcases a complex family and a victim who doesn’t know how to deal with his victimization.

Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman lead with Charles Melton in a supporting role. Moore gives another thought-provoking performance as this highly unlikable character who believes she is the sympathetic hero of her own story. Portman plays an actress who wants to tell an authentic story…but only to further her career.
Melton plays a young man who has his life stolen from him but is doing his best to pretend he’s happy.
These three humans clash in very subtle and interesting ways. May December is a film that’s less plot-driven and more character-focused. It’s another fall film that will spark many complicated discussions.

Melton gives the best performance of the film. He manages to stand out while acting alongside two titan actresses.
May December involves some very complex performances and more dark comedy than viewers will initially expect. It’s another must-watch fall Netflix film.

Their domestic bliss is disrupted when Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), a famous television actress, arrives in their tight-knit community to research her upcoming role as Gracie. As Elizabeth ingratiates herself into the everyday lives of Gracie and Joe, the uncomfortable facts of their scandal unfurl, causing long-dormant emotions to resurface. In May December, director Todd Haynes (Safe, Carol) explores one of the great talents of the human species: our colossal refusal to look at ourselves.
