Based on a True Story Renewed for Season 2 by Peacock

Based on a True Story will return with more stories in a second season.

Peacock has renewed the satire of the true crime genre with elements loosely inspired by true events for Season 2 after its eight-episode debut season premiered in June 2023.

The dark comedic thriller, starring Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina, comes from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Based on a True Story follows Cuoco’s Ava and her husband Nathan (Chris Messina) as “a down-on-their-luck couple, whose lives collide with an infamous serial killer terrorizing Los Angeles and seize a unique opportunity to capitalize on America’s obsession with true crime by making a podcast with the killer.”

The show is created by showrunner, executive producer, and writer Craig Rosenberg. In May 2023, Rosenberg released a statement about Based on a True Story when Peacock released its first-look images and announced its premiere date.

“Over the last decade, a true crime phenomenon has swept over America. Podcasts, documentaries, fictional shows based on true stories – they dominate the culture. Murderers have become celebrities and celebrities have become murderers which inspired me to create this show,” Rosenberg wrote.

“I became fascinated with the idea of a relatable married couple whose youthful dreams hadn’t come to fruition and who saw the true crime tidal wave as an opportunity to change their lives and save their marriage,” Rosenberg added.

“Our Los Angeles setting – the city where everybody wants to be famous – became a vivid backdrop to our story of fame, ambition, aspiration and murder. Please sit back and join Ava and Nathan as they try to navigate the dangerous proposal they make,” Rosenberg concluded.

Kaley Cuoco also executive produces Based on a True Story alongside Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan (Aggregate Films), and Alex Buono.

Buono directs Based on a True Story Season 1 Episode 1, “The Great American Artform,” and Based on a True Story Season 1 Episode 8, “The Universe.” Roxie Rodriguez (Aggregate Films) and Melissa Blake co-executive produce the series.

Based on a True Story Season 1’s cast includes Tom Bateman, Priscilla Quintana, Liana Liberato, Natalia Dyer, Alex Alomar Akpobome, Aisha Alfa, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Li Jun Li, June Diane Raphael, Brandon Keener, Jessica St. Clair, Claire Holt, Miles Mussenden, Sebastian Quinn, Belmont Cameli, Aaron Staton, Timm Sharp, Yvonne Senat Jones, Lizze Broadway, and Ever Carradine.
