Alec is recruited to solve a murder before the victim dies on The Irrational Season 1 Episode 2, “Dead Woman Walking.”
The peculiar situation of investigating a murder when no one has yet died comes about when an old friend, CJ, who also happens to be a well-renowned investigative journalist, approaches Alec to solve her murder, revealing that she has been poisoned.

That puts Alec in the unique situation of being able to gather insight and clues directly from the victim. Then again, as a dogged investigative journalist, CJ has plenty of enemies who might want to see her dead. Alec will need all the advantages he can get if he is going to fulfill his friend’s dying wish.
There aren’t many clues about what to expect from the characters’ personal stories for this episode. The Irrational Season 1 Episode 1, “Pilot,” understandably focused on Alec’s history and relationship with Marisa.
We learned a lot about his past. This included that he had been burned in an explosion at a church believed to have been set off by a lone racist perpetrator. We also learned that he didn’t remember details about the incident, and that experience motivated him to become a behavioral scientist.
On the romantic front, it was also revealed that Alec used to be married to Marisa and still has feelings for her. It’s a good bet that, in addition to the case of the week, we can expect the episode to expand on all that at least a little.
What we didn’t get on “Pilot” is much information about any of the supporting characters. Based on the preview photo of Phoebe holding some flowers in front of a grave, it seems we will start to get some of that starting with her.
What do you think Phoebe’s backstory might be? Who’s grave do you think she is visiting?
Episode description: Professor Mercer is approached by his old friend CJ, a prominent investigative journalist who asks for help after she’s poisoned with a rare and deadly nerve agent; with time running out, Mercer pieces together scant clues.
