Outlander: John Bell and Charles Vandervaart on the Introduction of Adult William [Interview]
One of the most exciting new characters being introduced in Outlander Season 7 is the now-grown William Ransom, played by Charles Vandervaart.
Having Jamie’s son return just as the story is getting more complicated will certainly be interesting to watch.
I spoke with Vandervaart, as well as John Bell (Young Ian), during a virtual press junket with members of the Outlander cast about what we can expect from Outlander Season 7 and the introduction of adult William.

While Ian knows everything now regarding the time travel and even who Jamie’s son is, William remains unaware.
“That fateful meeting between us was cracking to play,” Bell said. “The layers of it all… here’s Ian meeting his cousin but his cousin doesn’t know it’s him. And add on to that, in typical Outlander fashion, he’s also on the verge of death, so there’s a lot going on.
“But I think you’re going to see their relationship change and evolve as people and events are introduced that test them,” Bell added.
Vandervaart shared that he likes how passionate William Ransom is and that there’s similarity there with both Jamie and Lord John.
“He’s a very passionate person. That sometimes comes to bite him in the butt,” he said. “Because that passion can manifest as rage or as anger, and that puts him in some difficult situations.”
“But on that same note, his passion is why he cares so much for the people around him and why he is the way he is,” Vandervaart added. “And I think he inherited a lot of that from Jamie, and a lot of it from Lord John Grey. They’re both very passionate people.”
