The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 8 Review: Chapter 24: The Return

Reviews, The Mandalorian

The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 8, “Chapter 24: The Return,” brings an explosive battle between Moff Gideon, Din Djarin, and his allies. While it’s not quite as jaw-dropping as the penultimate outing, the show still delivers a solid finale that ties loose ends and presents beautiful character moments.

As a whole, Season 3 has been inconsistent tonally and on the pacing front. That said, creative big swings are always worth admiring, even if they don’t pan out 100 percent of the time. The Mandalorian‘s objective to broaden its storytelling horizons and expand its narrative scope yields fruit in some ways, like bringing familiar Star Wars characters into the live-action space.

DIN DJARIN: Grogu, I’m going to need you to be brave for me, okay? We can’t keep running, If we don’t take out Moff Gideon, this will never end.

For example, bringing Bo-Katan to the fore and shining a light on the Mandalorian group dynamic is certainly intriguing. Katee Sackhoff is a sci-fi staple and a strong performer. She’s a fun scene partner for Pedro Pascal.

Episodes like “Chapter 21: The Pirate” and “Chapter 23: The Spies” showcase wide-scale battle sequences and breathtaking visuals while injecting high stakes into their respective arcs. They feel like a return to form. “Chapter 19: The Convert” borrows a page from Andor‘s playbook to middling results, but at least the plot points from that outing contribute to a larger story in later episodes.

All this to say, this season tries new things that don’t always work, but one crucial facet it was missing before this episode is its heart. Din Djarin and Grogu (now Din Grogu) are the show’s lifeblood. Its ooey, gooey center. That’s not to say Season 3’s overall theme of community by bringing the Mandalorians together doesn’t make its mark, though.

MOFF GIDEON: I was isolating the potential to wield the Force and incorporating it into an unstoppable army. And you smothered them before they could draw their first breath.

Remember the Season 2 finale, “Chapter 16: The Rescue.” Besides the significant Luke Skywalker cameo, part of what made it so compelling was Din and Grogu’s bond. Din’s desperation to save Grogu. His letting Grogu leave with Luke so the latter can hone his abilities.

Their bond has evolved so much over three seasons. Most of those intimate character moments were sorely missing from Season 3. Thankfully, “Chapter 24: The Return” brings them back. Instead of endeavoring to find Grogu’s homeworld and family, Din finally acknowledges Grogu as his son instead of his ward and adopts him. Admittedly, that moment made this reviewer a little misty-eyed.

The moments that pack a punch and hold the most emotional resonance are when Din and Grogu are separated, entangled in their own fights for survival. While you know they’ll most likely (definitely) live to see another day, it’s the anxiety you feel during the action that arrests your attention.

BO-KATAN KRYZE: Mandalorians are stronger together.

Giancarlo Esposito is a formidable, imposing figure as Moff Gideon. His enthralling presence steals every scene he’s in. While we got very little screen time with him in Season 3, he’s a veritable highlight. Too bad his clones were destroyed; otherwise, we could see him again.

The fight sequences in “Chapter 24: The Return” are extensive and intricate. The aerial battles between the Mandalorians and Gideon’s troopers are fun to watch, along with the Praetorian Guard fighting Din and Bo-Katan and Gideon duking it out. Visually, it’s a feast for the eyes and an immersive treat for any Star Wars fan.

There’s something about this season finale that reads like a series finale. Firstly, the Mandalorians successfully defeat Gideon and his forces. They effectively retake Mandalore. Then, Din formally adopts Grogu, followed by an off-the-books contract with Captain Teva to serve the New Republic. Lastly, he and Grogu settle in a cabin on Nevarro. There’s an air of finality to it.

Of course, Jon Favreau has gone on the record to say he’ll keep making The Mandalorian as long as he still enjoys it. Disney would be foolish not to grant the series at least another season, given how it’s a boon for them financially.

There are potential narrative threads a Season 4 could explore, such as Bo-Katan and the Mandalorians rebuilding Mandalore and all that entails. Din and Grogu’s domestic hijinks on Nevarro. Din taking Grogu on bounty-hunting jobs as his apprentice. In a universe as vast as Star Wars, the possibilities are endless.

It will be unsurprising if the series returns to a more intimate format next season, mainly because of Din’s decision not to reside on Mandalore. Perhaps that’ll restore the balance in the Force.

Regardless, “Chapter 24: The Return” delivers a satisfying seasonal conclusion with action and adventure, bringing us back to the heart of it all: Din Djarin and Din Grogu—our favorite father and son. Even for Season 3’s misses, there’s undoubtedly plenty to love about it. Here’s hoping the Mandalorian’s escapades in a galaxy far, far away continue.

Stray Observations:

  • The real hero here is R5-D4. Look at how he simply flew away from those mouse droids!
  • There’s something inherently badass about Bo-Katan slicing enemies with the Darksaber while soaring through the air. The same goes for the Armorer — how the hell does one thwack their enemies with a hammer while flying? Bo-Katan and the Armorer were 100 percent more accurate than Moff Gideon’s troopers.
  • “Din Grogu and Frogs: A Love Story.” Hitting bookshelves this fall.
  • I love the symmetry in this finale, i.e., starting the season with Ragnar’s Mandalorian initiation ritual and essentially ending it with him finishing it. It’s good to finish what you started.
  • Grogu plopping on the ground after manipulating the Force to protect Bo-Katan and Din from the ship explosion’s flames is, as the kids say, a mood. Lil dude was all tuckered out.
  • If you look closely at the scene with Captain Teva, you’ll see Trapper Wolf, played by Dave Filoni. He’s even donning a hat.
  • I was hoping to glimpse live-action Thrawn in this episode, but alas. I’ll wait impatiently for Ahsoka
