The Last Thing He Told Me Season 1 Episode 4 Review: Witness to Your Life
With under half of its episodes remaining, AppleTV+’s The Last Thing He Told Me Season 1 Episode 4, “Witness to Your Life,” has the intrigue amped up to an 11. After a slow start, the limited series is firing at full steam with a number of cliffhangers that leave us wanting much more.
And as is typical for any mystery, the various plot pieces are coming together to show us the story’s bigger picture. I’ve been critical of the limited series’ pacing, but “Witness to Your Life,” is proof that patience pays off.

It’s also proof that the main thesis of a story can uncover itself as the story progresses. The Last Thing He Told Me positions itself as a “wife tracking down a missing husband” story. It’s actually a cleverly disguised story of a mother and her daughter.
Jennifer Garner and Angourie Rice continue to impress as Hannah and Bailey. With the major reveal that Bailey might not actually really be “Bailey Michaels”, their dynamic remains the highlight of this limited series.
The situation forces the duo to spend the most time with each other. The growth of their relationship from The Last Thing He Told Me Season 1 Episode 1 to “Witness To Your Life” is palpable and remains authentic.
It’s a testament to the two actors that what started as a despondent teenager/try-hard stepmother relationship has grown.

As pointed out earlier this season, Jennifer Garner has carved a place for herself in Hollywood as the go-to “Mom” for family projects. The Last Thing He Told Me proves that she can still play ball in the high-drama stories.
The journey continues in Austin in “Witness to Your Life.” By filming on campus at the University of Texas at Austin, the audience is immersed in the mystery. And Hannah and Bailey can immerse themselves in Owen’s history. It’s a win-win situation.
It allows seamless integration for new characters from Owen’s past. Where else do people hold down the same job for 20+ years than at Universities?

Since Jennifer Garner is an Executive Producer on this project, I’d guess she had a role to play in the addition of Victor Garber to the cast. The two most notably worked together on Garner’s most notable project on the silver screen, Alias. And they’ve stayed close ever since.
It’s fun seeing long-term friends share the screen once again and in such different roles. I’m not sure Garber is more than a one-and-done guest star, but they make the most of their time together. Garber’s Professor Cookman might hold the key to unlocking Owen’s past. Or at least Bailey’s.
Sidenote – It’s so interesting to see college campuses on-screen, and how different the academic buildings can be. The lecture hall in The Last Thing He Told Me is befitting of a highly lauded mathematics professor, but very different from massive classrooms that sometimes show up in college shows.

The Last Thing He Told Me Season 1 Episode 3, “Keep Austin Weird” made weird cuts away from the main storyline, and “Witness to Your Life” doubles down on that trend. However, there is some payoff.
The random insertions of US Marshall Grady do indeed lead to a larger role now that more of the story is being uncovered.
Only hindsight will prove if Grady’s story develops at a glacial pace or if it’s moving exactly how fast it needs to be. It is good to see more of Augusto Aguilera’s place in the story, and for him to interact with the leads rather than lurk in the shadows.

Now that he knows where Hannah and Bailey have run off, here’s hoping he integrates more clearly into the main story.
The cuts to flashbacks in The Last Thing He Told Me Season 1 Episode 4 are as frustrating as they were in “Keep Austin Weird.” The focus on Hannah’s backstory appears misguided.
If it’s just to establish Jules and Hannah’s friendship from when they were kids, they’re spending too much time there. If it means helping her realize that Bailey is similar to her as a teen, that’s great but unnecessary.

Bailey is the one that needs to warm up to Hannah, not the other way around. Let’s sort out Bailey’s mess before we deep dive into Hannah’s childhood.
Is there something to uncover from Hannah’s backstory, relevant to the mystery? I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong about these scenes if so. Right now they’re just distracting from the point.
After a demure start, The Last Thing He Told Me has me convinced. It’s figured out how to be a good mystery, now it just needs to cut some of the fodder to become great.
Stray Thoughts:
- It’s so funny to see the school I went to on a massive show like The Last Thing He Told Me. I had many an all-nighter in that library Hannah and Bailey visit in “Witness to Your Life.”
- Kudos to the casting team. Young Hannah (Cece Kelly) looks just like Jennifer Garner!
- The biggest plot hole here is how Hannah seems to remember the tiniest details. There’s no way people remember every conversation they’ve had with their significant other.
- Cheryl is the real MVP of this episode.
- As a UT Austin alumn, it’s hilarious that they used Rice as the academic rival instead of Texas A&M.
- It’s quite funny to see Hannah’s best friend have to team up with Hannah’s ex.
- Bold of them to assume Owen took a yearbook picture — is that a thing in college these days?
- The Photoshop job at the end of the episode was laughable but it got the point across.
