Preview — Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 16: Ben, Interrupted
Ben leaps to the 1950s to save a young woman on Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 16, “Ben, Interrupted.”
At the end of Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 15, “Ben Song for the Defense,” Ben leaps into the body of a man being committed to a psychiatric hospital by his wife. The natural assumption is that Ben’s mission will be to save that man from the horrors of the institution.
But, it turns out Ben is there to save someone else, or at least someone else in addition to himself. Ben’s mission on “Ben, Interrupted” is to help a young woman wrongly committed by her husband escape.
The mission of the week has the potential to be a provocative one with lots of rich material to explore.
First, there is the exploration of the conditions of psychiatric practices and institutions of the 1950s, something the preview material makes clear the episode will focus on.
In addition to that, though, the episode could also dig into gender, power, and how questioning women’s mental health has historically been used to control and disempower them. Quantum Leap has not shied away from tackling social issues on past episodes, so hopefully, “Ben, Interrupted” will be no different.
Big things are happening on “Ben, Interrupted, in regards to the mystery of Ben’s first leap as well. Not only does Martinez make another appearance, but even more shockingly, is the revelation of a mole in Quantum headquarters.
That’s something that will no doubt set the stage for the climax of the fast-approaching Season 1 finale.
