Hello Tomorrow! Season 1 Episode 7 Review: Another Day, Another Apocalypse
On Hello Tomorrow! Season 1 Episode 7, “Another Day, Another Apocalypse,” Jack reveals some of his magician’s secrets and it’s disappointing, to say the least. Though, not as disappointed as Shirley will be when she finds out just how big of a con artist Jack really is.
This episode is mostly Jack playing with fire. As much energy is spent putting out fires as there is into creating some of the fires in the first place. Whether it’s a distraction to buy time or a misdirection to throw off his marks, he’s putting on quite a magic show.

Sometimes his tricks backfire and he gets burned—Joey’s rejection of him at the end of Hello Tomorrow! Season 1 Episode 6, “The Numbers Behind the Numbers,” was particularly scorching. That episode focused on the depressing side of Jack’s self-destructive behavior.
On this one we see Jack enjoying the thrill of the grift and the rush that comes from the danger of being exposed as a liar; and it looks an awful lot like addiction.
Perhaps it is in his blood, like his mother claims and his backstory suggests. And the gift of selling proved to come naturally to his offspring as well.

Jack begins the episode desperate, and even says as much to Mrs. Selwyn (Dagmara Dominczyk) before his unorthodox but effective sales pitch. Once he feels he has her on the hook, his desperation evaporates and he’s able to do what he does best.
There is excitement behind his deception now that he’s dug himself into too deep of a hole. Without Joey, he’s got nothing to lose, and for a professional swindler, that’s a dangerous position in which to be.
Billy Crudup shows these shifts of Jack’s mood very subtly, and that’s a testament to his great ability as an actor. But even with his well-crafted performance, the story continues to suffer.

Jack’s magic trick analogy becomes a self-own to the show itself. Watching it is about as entertaining as a magic show with no rabbit and no hat. It’s frustrating, and somewhat stressful, to see Jack continue to skate by on his weak lies.
It’s about time he face the music, and, luckily, that time looks to be fast approaching. With an angry mob assembled by Myrtle and Jack’s slip to Shirley that ends the episode, a reckoning is forecasted for the final stretch of episodes.
Jack’s revealing comment comes across as intentional, as if he wants to be caught, to finally put an end to the madness.

The whole operation is about to blow up, but with the uninspired banality of the build-up, a satisfying, explosive finale doesn’t seem to be in the cards.
