Ben plays the part of a family man on Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 12, “Let Them Play.”
After preventing an explosion at a nuclear reactor on Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 11, “Leap. Die. Repeat,” Ben leaps to 2012. There he finds himself in the body of a father whose transgender daughter wants to play on her school basketball team.

Ben’s mission seems pretty straightforward. He is there to help the Mendéz family advocate for their daughter, Gia, and secure her place on the team.
What is less clear is why that requires Ben’s intervention. Gia faces discrimination as people try to keep her of the team, which is certainly a crisis for the family. Still, why is it one they need outside help to resolve? What goes wrong in the original timeline, and what other dynamics are at play within the family?
There is more to this mission than we can glean from the preview material, and whatever it is, it is almost certainly Ben’s real mission.
This is the most timely and politically relevant issue Quantum Leap has taken on this season. It will be interesting to see how they handle it and what themes they explore on the episode.
Elsewhere on the “Let Them Play,” there is a new player in the mystery of why Ben made his unauthorized leap. Dottie is likely the name that Janice gave Addison at the end of “Leap. Die. Repeat.” That’s about all we can theorize on so far.
She seems like a pretty unlikely lead, but people are usually more than meets the eye with these kinds of stories.
What do you think Dottie’s connection to Ben is? Do you think she will be a friend or a foe?
