Big Sky: Deadly Trails Season 3 Episode 11 Review: Super Foxes

Big Sky, Reviews

A rocky season starts to pick up momentum for the final three episodes with Big Sky: Deadly Trails Season 3 Episode 11, “Super Foxes.”

It has been hit or miss this season on Big Sky. Perhaps it’s because all the weirdness and action has been saved up for a grand finale, which will be a two-parter.

This episode kicks the main storyline into high gear, thankfully, as the season has been consistently plagued with dull lulls and uninteresting procedural side stories.

Bringing in Jenny’s mom, Gigi, played by Rosanna Arquette on Season 3 Episode 3, “A Brief History of Crime,” was an addition that worked very well, but that dynamic was gone by the episode’s end. We finally get an update on the grifter and things take a pretty dark turn.

Big Sky‘s ability to creep me out has been strong in the past. However, it’s waning this season.

“Super Foxes” is an exciting installment within this Deadly Trails tale, reminiscent of early episodes throughout Seasons 1 and 2 that got me hooked on the show in the first place.

I’ve been waiting—not so patiently—for the conflict in this mystery to ramp up to levels Big Sky has already proven it can handle. This episode certainly satisfies my cravings for the dark and demented side of the series.

The cult-like commune is a horrific place for Jenny and Gigi to face their possible demise. And it’s made even more twisted with the audience of children watching a deadly game of …cornhole.

This is how I like my Big Sky

It’s super creepy and kinda hilarious, too. Pitting mother against daughter—who already have a fractured relationship—in this deranged scenario adds an interesting dramatic element. Not to mention the cornhole game itself is majorly intense.

Arquette, once again, turns out a great performance as Jenny’s mom. Winnick comes through with those teary eyes that should be registered as an emotional weapon. Cool-headed Cassie comes to the rescue in the nick of time.

The whole thing is a well-executed nail-biter.

And the tension isn’t limited to mother/daughter plot line. It’s revealed that Buck is the Bleeding Heart murderer—several clues have pointed to him along the way—but that makes the situation Paige is in all the more frightening.

As always, Tonya and Donno provide levity and laughs. The episode title refers to Donno’s dream of breeding foxes, which is completely random and totally welcome. His eyes positively light up when he talks about it.

Speaking of being impatient, when is the Tonya/Donno ship going to set sail already? If she breaks his heart, I’m gonna be upset.

Big Sky: Deadly Trails Season 3 Episode 11 is a step in the right direction, and a strong step at that.

Is it too late, though? Is the season salvageable with these last three episodes? If “Super Foxes” is any indication then it’s definitely possible.
