The mystery series 1899 has been canceled by Netflix after one season.

Per Deadline, sources have confirmed the cancellation to the outlet, but showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese broke the news on Instagram. The duo is also behind Netflix’s Dark, which debuted in 2017.

“With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life,” their statement read.

“We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget,” it concluded.

TV Line reports that they have reached out to Netflix about the show’s cancellation.

1899‘s first and now final season consisted of eight episodes and debuted on Netflix in November of last year.

Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, and José Pimentão are among 1899‘s cast.

According to Deadline, “Production of 1899 took place on a newly-built, state of the art virtual production stage housed at Babelsberg Studios in Germany — the largest such facility in Europe.”

Per Netflix’s description, the show follows the passengers, who are “a mixed bag of European origins,” of a migrant steamship heading west to leave the old continent.

The passengers unite in “their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea. What they will find on board, will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare.”

Friese and Odar served as co-showrunners and executive producers on 1899. Meanwhile, Friese wrote, and Odar directed.

1899 is streaming now on Netflix.
