Reginald the Vampire, Reviews

Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 7, “The Last Day of Our Acquaintance,” loses the plot a little bit. While the episode is still enjoyable to watch, it loses some of the threads from earlier in the season to focus on Reginald’s two-timing behavior with Nikki and Sarah.

“The Last Day of Our Acquaintance” starts off promising giving us a Rashoman-esque story as we pick up from last week’s episode. We get to see a little bit of what happens between the events of Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 6, “Halfway to a Threeway,” but the format is quickly abandoned halfway through.

It’s not necessarily a bad decision, because figuring out what happens shouldn’t take an entire episode. The contrast between the three sides to the story also isn’t stark enough to give us more material to work on.

This set up also led me to believe that we would be focusing more on vampire lore and less about Reginald’s love life. The lead in to Maurice helping Sarah with her memory and Nikki with Claire hooked me in, but the episode doesn’t really follow through, and some transitions where accompanied by jarring location changes.

“The Last Day of Our Acquaintence” really isn’t a bad episode. It does keep the story moving and continues to advance the plot. The introduction of new conflict into Reginald and Sarah’s relationship isn’t a bad direction for the plot, especially if it introduces more lore. (I am personally still convinced that Sarah’s gonna find out her cult was right about angels.)

All of those pieces do feel like they’re building to something more important and this was the bridge we needed to get us there. After Reginald spirals and kills Todd (not yet confirmed) we see him board a bus to Spokane that could lead to him seeking out Abraham in an attempt to become human again before the assessment.

This all makes sense, but Reginald the Vampire is letting us experience this world and lore purely through Reginald. This is character-driven storytelling and it’s working for the most part.

But we also have to talk about the second half of the episode. Watching Reginald cheat on Sarah, and think he can actually get away with it, is the most douchebag move. It seems so out of character, when he has been portrayed as a nice guy from the first episode.

Yes, he’s dealing with being a vampire, and needing blood, and sucking at hunting, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that he thinks he can take have his cake and eat it too.

When he is finally exposed, it’s hard to feel any sympathy for this character who we have come to love. He deserves to have Sarah walk out on him, for his glamour to fail, and then to lose Nikki. Not to mention, Claire didn’t deserve to be in the middle of that crossfire.

I don’t think that Reginald can’t be redeemed. He’s not so far gone that he needs a full redemption arc, but he does need to recognize his own behaviors and apologize to Sarah, Claire, Nikki, and Maurice. He has made his choices and his rush off to Spokane is him looking for a quick fix.

By the end of the first season, Reginald is going to need to take being a vampire seriously. It’s starting to feel more and more like that will all come with The Assessment, but he needs to work his own emotions out first, and maybe some time away from Sarah will help that.

Still pulling for them to be “endgame” though, because they are cute together.

Stray Thoughts:
  • Nikki’s song was a weird segue into the episode.
  • The lack of Ashley in this episode is criminal. I need more of her obsessed The Lone Gunman-esque theories about the weird stuff happening in Akron.
  • I honestly thought maybe Maurice would turn Sarah into a vampire, if only to get Reginald to take The Assessment seriously.
  • I need to know more about Claire’s motivation. The realization that she wants to be a vampire to fight evil definitely gives more context to her wishes, but it also just leave a lot. Especially, with Nikki’s comments about smelling sulfer.
  • Maurice deserves better. That’s it.
