Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 6 Review: Halfway to a Threeway

Reginald the Vampire, Reviews

Reginald’s love life gets more complicated on Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 6, “Halfway to a Threeway.”

After the final scene of Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 5, “Fools in Love,” and the strange performance of “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Nikki is enamored with Reginald. It’s funny, but only in the way that it cripples a contract killer from ending our main character.

However, Nikki is also a complication for Sarah and Reginald who seem to finally be getting to a good place when they go on their normal date. Their banter is so normal that I feel like I would watch an episode that featured a date where Reginald and Sarah decided to go over tax law and file their taxes, or just sit on a park bench and Forrest Gump it through an entire episode.

Nikki’s determination to kill Sarah and fight for Reginald gets in the way of that, but given how much chemistry she has with Ashley, it’s hard to believe that they’ll be endgame. If the glamour and infatuation with Reginald keeps Nikki in Akron for a while and keeps Nikki and Ashley in the same circles then I think I could be happy with the outcome.

Reginald and Sarah are an adorable couple, but the fact that they seem to be so normal right now may be doing the show a disservice. While Reginald does have that daydream about Sarah and Nicky and pancakes with blood syrup, his vampirism has been relegated to the b-plot of the assessment.

I will always enjoy TV shows that are able to balance their content, but in a show called Reginald the Vampire, I expected his new vampirism to be slightly more at the forefront. I respect the beginnings of larger worldbuilding that I can see coming down the line, but in some ways “Halfway to a Threeway” feels like filler save for a few tidbits of information that may be useful later.

Nikki couldn’t have dropped the whole vampire hunter bit just for it to mean nothing right?

“Halfway to a Threeway” also introduces us to dangers for Angela too. There’s something refreshing about a series that takes a big bad and adds a bigger bad on top of it. It gives the story somewhere to go and ups the stakes.

We may not like Angela, but the realization that there’s something at stake for her at least gives her motivation beyond pure evil. Her conversations tell us that there is so much we don’t know about her world and it’s becoming clearer that Reginald is only going to know about it during the assessment.

Overall, Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 6, “Halfway to a Threeway,” is a good episode. It’s got some great character moments and it does provide an enjoyable story. However, it is harder to see who the pieces connect on this episode.

Stray Thoughts:
  • How is Reginald eating right now? Todd isn’t an option, is he just running off the blood he siphoned from Todd until he finds another option?
  • Nikki the bartender may have been my favorite version of Nikki to show up.
  • Ashley is a character that is so bright that she can’t see what’s in front of her. If she and Nikki don’t end up together, or Ashley doesn’t end up a vampire, I am going to be disappointed.
  • Moving a test up is literally everyone’s worse nightmare. Excuse me while I go breathe into a paper bag.
