Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 5 Review: Fools in Love

Reginald the Vampire, Reviews

Halfway through its first season order, this freshmen series continues to deliver twists and turns with Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 5, “Fools in Love,”

What makes this series interesting is how it continues to flesh out its story while leading the viewer to a likely conclusion. “Fools in Love” continues by laying the first inklings of potential problems that Reginald and Sara will face.

The corn nuts conversation followed by a headbutt is a cute way for the characters to discover that there may be some downsides to having a relationship with a human.

It also hangs a hat on how Reginald’s plan of using Todd as a blood bank doesn’t solve the long-term problem. Reginald needs to feed but he can’t rely on Todd to be his steady food source. He’s going to need to learn to hunt eventually.

While it is starting to feel like the series is building towards the assessment being the finale, it also isn’t relying on that carrying the plot forward. “Fools in Love” wants you to know that Reginald is training and that the assessment is still on his mind, but it’s also not the only threat.

Nicky’s introduction feels like a unique segue into that world. She’s been talked up as being a killing machine and a “stone-cold killer” which is what makes it a gratifying WTF moment when, instead of killing Reginald, she picks up the mic and starts singing Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” with him and Sarah.

While the episode leaves off with us wondering exactly what happened (even though we can probably guess it was a form of glamour) it gives us an idea of exactly how naive the newly sired Reginald is. He’s still learning. He’s a baby.

And more importantly, no one around him knows what the hell is going on either.

We also can’t go without mentioning Sarah’s brother Levi. Why it feels like a throwaway moment, the fact that the cult is trying to bring Sarah back into the fold can’t be dismissed. I commented on previous reviews about it feels like the series is building towards a larger reveal of a supernatural underworld and Levi feels very much a part of that construction.

Still, it’s terrifying when Sarah goes to the back of his van and sees the altar with the handcuffs set up. It makes me worried for Sarah in more ways than one.

With “Fools in Love” serving as the mid-season finale it definitely feels like this series will continue to press into new territory that enriches the world it’s created.

Stray Thoughts:
  • Mike’s monologue is touching. It explains why he would be willing to spy for Angela, but I think Maurice’s decision to just kick him out is even more telling. I think it speaks to the history and feelings these two have.
  • Ashley and Nicky’s moment in the park was very queer. I am betting Nicky sticks around a bit if Angela doesn’t rip out her heart.
  • Props to Savannah Basley, her close-up when Nicky takes the stage and starts singing instead of murdering is a chef’s kiss.
  • Claire asking to be turned into a vampire feels a little bit like Bella Swan, but we also don’t know her whole story. I am not saying there’s a good reason for it, but maybe there’s something more at work.
  • I guess we can go back to hating Todd again. Let’s see if he’s still his pre-glamour jerk self.
