When you think about British period dramas, certain things tend to immediately spring to mind. The high drama of the Tudor court. The deft social manners of the Regency period. The Victorian era’s obsession with both death and industrial progress.

But the upcoming Prime Video series The English aims to tackle a very different historical period: The American West.

The series follows the story of English aristocrat Lady Cornelia Locke, who comes to the harsh frontier of America seeking revenge on the man she believes to be responsible for the death of her son. Racked with grief and fury, she seeks out the help of a Pawnee ex-calvary scout named Eli Whipp to guide her on her trek across the country to a small town in Wyoming.

The pair will face violence, danger, and threats along the way — the series’ trailer below is full of haunting and disturbing images of violence — and eventually discover that they share a history they never would have guessed.

Series description: An aristocratic Englishwoman, Lady Cornelia Locke (Emily Blunt), and a Pawnee ex-cavalry scout, Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer), come together in 1890 middle America to cross a violent landscape built on dreams and blood. Both of them have a clear sense of their destiny, but neither is aware that it is rooted in a shared past. They must face increasingly terrifying obstacles that will test them to their limits, physically and psychologically. But as each obstacle is overcome, it draws them closer to their ultimate destination—the new town of Hoxem, Wyoming. It is here, after an investigation by the local sheriff Robert Marshall (Stephen Rea) and young widow Martha Myers (Valerie Pachner) into a series of bizarre and macabre unsolved murders, that the full extent of their intertwined history will be truly understood, and they will come face-to-face with the future they must live.
