Paper Girls Canceled By Amazon’s Prime Video After One Season

News, Paper Girls

Paper Girls has been canceled by Amazon’s Prime Video after one season.

The news comes on the heels of the eight-episode first season was released on July 29 and garnered a 90% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes with an 88% audience score.

However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the series failed to break Neilsen’s Top 10 Original Streaming lists in the three weeks after its release.

In its exclusive report about the news, Deadline speculates that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and its impressive marketing campaign, which premiered on the same streaming service on September 2, may have overshadowed Paper Girls.

Legendary TV is shopping the series around for a new home.

Per Deadline, they hope that the popularity of TV shows like Euphoria and The Sex Lives of College Girls will help their efforts.

We have been following this graphic novel adaptation since Amazon first announced the series commitment in 2020.

The sci-fi series is based on the comic book of the same name by Brian K. Vaugh and Cliff Chiang, first published in 2016. Paper Girls kicks off on the morning after Halloween 1988 and follows four young girls delivering papers who get caught in a conflict between warring factions of time travelers.

The series starred four young actresses — Sofia Rosinksy, Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet, and Fina Strazza. Ali Wong joined them.

Paper Girls took the girls on a journey that introduced them to their future selves and ensconced them in the Time War between The Old Watch and STF Underground. The show was remarkably faithful to the comics.

The season — now series — finale left viewers on a cliffhanger when The Prioress sent Tiff and Erin to Larry’s farm, but well before 1988.

This finale leaves viewers wondering why the Prioress would do such a thing and what other timelines the girls might encounter. After all, the presence of the girls in these different timeframes means they might be messing with their future.

These questions could be answered if Legendary TV successfully finds a new home for the series. Then, the girls can learn more about the politics and mysteries behind the Time War.

Paper Girls was produced by Christopher C. Rogers, Stephany Folsom, Christopher Cantwell, Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang, Steven Prinz, and Plan B. It was adapted for television by Folsom.

Folsom exited as co-showrunner during production on Season 1, with Rogers becoming the sole showrunner.
