HBO has given a series order to the limited series The Palace, slated to star Academy Award winner Kate Winslet.

Per its logline, The Palace tells the story of one year within the walls of the palace of an authoritarian regime as it begins to unravel.

Kate Winslet is also slated to executive produce the limited series. Winslet also starred in and executive produced another HBO limited series, Mare of Easttown, in 2021.

Mare of Easttown had significant success during the 2021 award circuit, taking home 4 Emmy awards, including Winslet’s win as Outstanding Lead Actress for her role as Detective Mare Sheehan. She also took home a SAG and a Golden Globe award.

The limited series was so successful for the network that HBO Max’s servers crashed shortly after the season finale dropped due to the influx of viewers.

Winslet also won the Emmy in 2011 for her performance in HBO’s limited series Mildred Pierce, making this new project all the more exciting. The Palace is the latest addition to Winslet’s partnership with HBO but not the last.

HBO recently announced it is developing the limited series Trust — based on the novel by Hernan Diaz — which Kate Winslet will also star in and executive produce.

As for The Palace, Acclaimed director Stephen Frears, who has two Academy Award nominations for Best Director under his belt, will serve as director and executive producer of the series.

Will Tracy, whose most recent work includes Succession, which received an Emmy win for Outstanding Drama Aeries, will serve as showrunner, executive producer, writer, and director.

Frank Rich will be an executive producer, while Seth Reiss, Juli Weiner, Jen Spyra, Gary Shteyngart, and Sarah DeLappe will serve as writers on the show.

Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming, spoke about the project saying, “We are honored to be working with this incredibly talented group of filmmakers on The Palace.”

“The notion that Kate Winslet and Stephen Frears, two of our industry’s leading lights (who – remarkably – have never collaborated before now), are joining forces to bring Will Tracy’s wildly original, prescient, and dazzling scripts to life at HBO is a dream come true for us,” Orsi added.

Even with the limited details of this limited series, HBO and Kate Winslet’s track record all but confirms The Palace is bound to be a hit.
