‘Our Flag Means Death’ Renewed for Season 2 on HBO Max

News, Our Flag Means Death

This is not a fuckery. The queer pirates are back for another adventure on the high seas.

Our Flag Means Death has consistently topped all the viewing charts since its Season 1 finale on March 24th.

This, along with a very vocal, passionate fanbase — which includes much of the cast and crew of the show — ensured a Season 2 was on the horizon.

We can all take a collective sigh of relief because HBO Max has officially announced a Season 2 for this merry band of misfit pirates. On the first day of Pride Month, no less.

This news continues to excite the queer community that rallied behind this show almost from day one due to the casual representation it offered.

It’s not just the LGBTQIA+ individuals who are seen within this show because the representation David Jenkins’ creation also centers on individuals of color, giving them a much-needed voice in this world.

Our Flag Means Death centers on real pirates: Stede Bonnet and Edward “Blackbeard” Teach, but in a nonsensical, historically inaccurate way.

After all, the only historical accuracy that goes into this show is the names, and it takes place in 1717 during the Golden Age of Pirates.

Beyond that, it’s a mish-mosh of references that don’t align with the time and yet make the characters endearing. Fans love the show even more because it doesn’t get caught up in being historically accurate.

By releasing themselves from that restraint, the writers and creator of the show were able to give voice to some very real issues from that period — namely racism, bigotry, and classism.

There isn’t a utopian feel about this show, but that’s okay because viewers walk away realizing the world hasn’t always been a nice place for everyone, but the high seas allow an escape from all that.

Rhys Darby has been turning heads as the lead role of Stede Bonnet. This quirky man of high class leaves his whole life behind to become a pirate — only to fail at it so terribly he gains the attention of notorious pirate Blackbeard, played by Taika Waititi.

What progresses is a beautiful story about the power of found family and love guiding you more than actual skill and experience. Life is hard, but sometimes finding an escape is the best reprieve.

No one on the ship is judged for their romantic interests or quirks because everyone understands what it’s like not to feel valued. As Stede says, they work it through — as a crew.

And the fans of this oddball romantic comedy have done just that. They’ve come together as a crew to ensure the continued success of their favorite show to date.

A date hasn’t been set for Season 2 to begin filming, but either way, the news has been a long time coming. So in the meantime, gather up your crew and rewatch Season 1 or devise your own version of a fuckery in celebration.
