Hulu’s releasing the long-awaited adaption of Conversations with Friends on Sunday, May 15th. The show marks the second time Hulu’s adapted a Sally Rooney book after the critically acclaimed Normal People series in 2020.

The 12-part limited series stars Alison Oliver making her on-screen debut as Frances, a Trinity College Dublin student who performs spoken word poetry with her best friend and ex-girlfriend Bobbi, played by Sasha Lane (LokiAmerican Honey). Joe Alwyn (The FavouriteHarriet) plays Nick, a dashing actor with deep insecurities. He’s married to Melissa, an accomplished writer, played by Jemima Kirke (GirlsSex Education).

On Conversations with Friends, the young students find themselves entangled in Nick and Melissa’s lives and marriage. Together, the four characters test the strengths and meanings of love, friendship, and loyalty.

The prolific Irish millennial author, Sally Rooney, has acquired somewhat of a cult following among readers with her coming-of-age novels tackling complex and relatable themes. She co-wrote the first six episodes of Normal People and worked closely with director Lenny Abrahamson and co-writer Alice Birch in Conversations with Friends

Rooney published Conversations with Friends in 2017 as her debut novel.

We can look forward to plenty of steamy Rooney-style romantic scenes, heart-wrenching emotional drama, and thoughtful dialogue in the upcoming Hulu series, released by BBC 3 and iPlayer in the UK and RTÉ in Ireland. The trailer hints at the discussions of moral dilemmas, including Frances’ shy reluctance to hurting a marriage, to which Nick admits that others have already hurt it.

Episode description: Conversations with Friends follows Frances, a 21-year-old college student, as she navigates a series of relationships that force her to confront her own vulnerabilities for the first time. Frances is observant, cerebral and sharp. Her ex-girlfriend, now best friend, Bobbi is self-assured, outspoken and compelling. Though they broke up three years ago, Frances and Bobbi are virtually inseparable and perform spoken word poetry together in Dublin. It’s at one of their shows that they meet Melissa, and older writer, who is fascinated by the pair. Bobbi and Frances start to spend time with Melissa and her husband, Nick, a handsome but reserved actor. While Melissa and Bobbi flirt with each other openly, Nick and Frances embark on an intense secret affair that is surprising to them both. Soon the affair begins to test the bond between Frances and Bobbi, forcing Frances to reconsider her sense of self, and the friendship she holds so dear.
