Home Economics Review: Ticket to Space, $1 Million (Season 2 Episode 22)
The Home Economics Season 2 finale, Episode 22, “Ticket to Space, $1 Million,” takes its storylines in some really wonderful directions.
After two rough break-ups, Connor is having an identity crisis and looking for meaning in his life. Being ridiculous and ridiculously rich, naturally, he turns to space, the final frontier.
“Connor, this is so dangerous and such a waste of money. Not to mention the environmental impact.” These are all good points from Sarah and exactly the ones I would make. It would be nice if he used his wealth for something good down here on Earth.
And that is the purpose he finds over the course of the episode when he witnesses Tom suffer a major setback to the publishing of his novel.

Connor: The whole thing on the roof made me realize what it is that gives me meaning. And it’s this. Helping my family.
It is such a sweet pivot and shows real growth from Connor. It saves Tom’s book from languishing in publishing purgatory, and he doesn’t brag about it or even tell Tom. That is a secret reveal that is best left for Season 3 because, no doubt, Connor owning the Dutch media firm that is responsible for the book release is sure to cause some conflict between the brothers.
For now, it’s lovely to bask in this really nice thing that Connor has done for Tom and the good news.
But, Home Economics doesn’t stop there. Marina also does something incredibly thoughtful for Tom. Creating the writing space (or Batcave) in the newly-found attic of their home is not only super helpful to Tom and his confidence, but it might’ve sparked a whole new direction for Marina as well.

Big life decisions seems to be the theme of this finale episode, because Denise and Sarah suffer a setback of their own on the baby front when Denise finds out she’s unable to get pregnant.
Sarah, who initially was freaked out by the idea of having a baby, has been warming to it, and on this episode she volunteers to carry the baby.
Sarah: You know, I figure we use your eggs and then I could carry it and then the baby would truly be both of ours which is what we talked about.
Denise: You would do that for me?
Sarah: No. I would do it for us.
Sarah getting emotional is contagious because I’m tearing up, too; this is so freaking precious.

This Sarah and Denise convo complements one between Tom and Marina about the attic space and Tom’s future as a writer.
Marina: Hey, I believe in you. I believe in us. We’re a family and we’re gonna get through this together as a family.
This display of heartfelt familial love is what inspires Connor to do his act of generosity. Home Economics is about family and family coming together despite huge differences in their income levels.
And Connor is the catalyst for their reconnection and bonding. It was his move to the Bay Area that got the siblings to see each other more often and become the strong, supportive extended family unit that we have come to know and love as well.
I love that the Season 2 finale focuses on just that and in big, beautiful ways.
