Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford Join ‘Yellowstone’ Prequel ‘1923’

News, Yellowstone

Yellowstone fans rejoice; we’ve got some big news about the prequel series 1923.

Paramount+ has announced that the series has welcomed acclaimed actors Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford into the cast of the Yellowstone prequel.

Yellowstone season 1 Costner and more
“Yellowstone” premieres Wednesday, June 20, on Paramount Network. John Dutton (center – Kevin Costner), owner of the Dutton Ranch, is surrounded by his ranch team (pictured l to r) Walker (Ryan Bingham), Lloyd (Forrie Smith), Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), Jimmy (Jefferson White), Colby (Denim Richards) and Fred (Luke Peckinpah).

Earlier this year, 1883 kicked off what Paramount+ has deemed “Yellowstone‘s origin story,” and it seems as though 1923 will follow in its highly praised footsteps.

The official description states that the series will “explore the early 20th century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.”

This prequel was announced shortly after the success of 1883. The new series joins the ever-expanding Yellowstone Universe, alongside 6666, which Paramount announced was in development.

The original series follows patriarch John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, as he fights to save his ranch alongside his children Kayce, Beth, and Jamie.

Yellowstone season 2 episode 3 Costner Reilly Bentley and Grimes
The Dutton family (from L to R – Kelly Reilly, Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, and Wes Bentley) debate at the dinner table in Paramount Network’s hit drama series “Yellowstone.” Episode 3 – “The Reek of Desperation” premieres on Wednesday, July 10 at 10 p.m., ET/PT on Paramount Network.

1883 executive producer David C. Glasses gave a statement about the announcement, sharing, “Taylor Sheridan has put roots down for the Dutton Family tree that stands strong and tall, with many branches that continue to engage record-breaking audiences.”

“It is awe-inspiring to work with Taylor, ViacomCBS, and the entire team on this universe,” Glasses continued.

There’s little information regarding the plot or who Mirren and Ford’s characters are, but creator Taylor Sheridan said in a teaser video, “With Yellowstone, I had built out this backstory of where the Dutton family came from.”

Yellowstone season 2 episode 8 Luke Grimes and Brecken Merrill
Kayce (R-Luke Grimes) finally lets Tate (L-Brecken Merrill) get his own horse on Paramount Network’s hit drama series “Yellowstone.” Episode 8 – “Behind Us Only Grey” premieres on Wednesday, August 14 at 10 p.m., ET/PT on Paramount Network.

“And with 1923, I chose that moment in time to peek back in because you’re seeing the children we’ve met in 1883 now attempting to raise another generation of Duttons in a time where the Wild West is becoming a playground for the elite from the East,” Sheridan added.

It’s unsure whether 1923 will be a limited series like 1883, but it is set to premiere in December and will be produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and Bosque Ranch Productions.

Until then, you can watch Yellowstone on Peacock and 1883, which is streaming on Paramount+.
