Patrick Fabian on Saying Goodbye to ‘Better Call Saul’ and the Potential to Reprise His ‘Saved by the Bell’ Role [Interview]

The word we heard the most on the Better Call Saul red carpet during PaleyFest was “bittersweet.”

Patrick Fabian echoed that sentiment.

We caught up with Fabian, who plays Howard Hamlin on the series, to discuss saying goodbye to Better Call Saul as it heads into its final season, as well as whether or not he’d ever consider reprising one of his earliest roles as an actor.

“Bob [Odenkirk] said it best I think,” Fabian began. “We checked all the boxes. We did everything. We became friends, we were on the high desert in the middle of the night, we rescued dogs, we made this show, we got angry with one another, we got in love [with one another]. There’s no stone unturned in what we’ve done. And in that respect, we can say job well done.”

“But in the same respect, it’s like the last week of high school. Where you’re like, ‘Oh no! I’m not going to see you anymore! Come see me!’ Right? And the fact of the matter is, we’re going to see each other, but this moment in time is done,” he said.

“So I can’t have asked for a better seven years with a better bunch of people,” Fabian continued.

“The fact that it’s been so critically embraced and the fact that the fans have loved it so much has been a real career capstone. I may do something better in my life, but if I don’t, I’m certainly happy with what I got right now.”

Speaking of Fabian’s acting career overall, it only made sense to ask about one of his earliest roles: Professor Lasky on Saved by the Bell: The College Years. Fabian discussed whether or not he sees any potential to reprise that role on the reboot series and if he would be willing should the opportunity arise.

“An actor is always willing. But here’s the thing. If you recall Professor Lasky from Saved by the Bell: The College Years, he had some of the most beautiful hair. I mean it was like Shaun Cassidy level,” Fabian said. “So I don’t know if I could go back with this, you know what I’m saying?” Fabian laughed, pointing to his head.

“This is more like Malcolm McDowell area here. I’m moving into a different direction. So I don’t know,” he added. “Maybe!”
