Israeli Drama ‘The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem’ Is Coming to Netflix
Yes Studios’ latest Israeli drama, The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem, will soon be available for international viewers to enjoy on Netflix!
The series previously released in Israel joins other notable and popular Israeli dramas, including Shtisel and Fauda, on Netflix. This logical move means Netflix viewers in multiple regions globally can access the first part of Season 1 on May 20, which Variety initially exclusively reported.
The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Israeli author Sarit Ishai-Levi. The story follows the often ill-fated Ermozas, a Sephardic family in Jerusalem whose women are cursed to marry men who don’t love them.
This period drama is also a snapshot into Israeli history, spanning the Ottoman Empire, The British Mandate, and Israel’s War of Independence.

The series features newcomer Swell Ariel Or in the titular role, Luna. She is joined by notable Israeli actors, including Michael Aloni (Fauda), Hila Saada (Beauty and the Baker), and Yuval Scharf (McMafia), among others. Together, they play the Ermozas and those around them, navigating lives of love and loss.
This historical period piece also looks at the dynamics between the different cultures in the region over the 20th century.
The novel features a unique look at the communities that lived side by side in Pre-Balfour Jerusalem, including Muslims, Jews, and Christians. The book captures how these relationships among communities evolve over the years and how damaging the loss of those relationships can be.
The series may explore additional themes and characters than what was introduced in the book. The trailer indicates some critical deviations and additions from the book. The fact that there will be a second season could see more detail added to the storylines than was introduced in the source material.

The multi-language drama features Hebrew, Arabic, and also Ladino, a Judeo-Spanish language still spoken today in the Sephardic community. The inclusion of Ladino is a bold step for an Israeli TV show since it remains an uncommon occurrence. Aloni also provides the English dubbed version of his character.
The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem has already been decorated with four Israeli TV Academy Awards, including Best Daily Drama.
The first season of The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem will air on Netflix in two parts, each containing ten episodes.
The first ten episodes cover up to the British occupation of Jerusalem and will be released on Netflix on May 20. The second half will drop on Netflix on July 29. Season 2 of The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem will start production in June.
