Emily VanCamp Set to Return to ‘The Resident’ for Season 5 Finale
The Resident fans can expect to see former series star Emily VanCamp reprise her role as Nic Nevins in the medical drama’s Season 5 finale!
Co-showrunner Peter Elkoff confirms to TVLine that the character will return in “four, maybe five” flashback sequences during the season finale, set to air on May 17.
This news follows the announcement, exclusively reported by Deadline, that Andrew McCarthy will also be joining the cast of The Resident in the final episodes of this season, with the option to return pending a series renewal.
VanCamp was an integral part of the Chastain Memorial family for four seasons. The Resident Season 5 tragically killed off her character at the beginning of the current season in a car accident.
Her husband Conrad (Matt Czuchry) was left devastated and is currently raising the couple’s young daughter Gigi.
At the time, VanCamp told Deadline of her departure, “I think there comes a moment in every woman’s life — in every person’s life — where it becomes less about work and more about family, and that’s what happened while I was making the show.”
Following the character’s death, The Resident jumped ahead three years. This choice has provided opportunities to explore new stories within the series.
Namely, Conrad has spent much of the season’s second half in more of a supporting role, which has given other characters the spotlight.
Season 5 of The Resident has also focused so much on the concept of grief and loss. The season finale is set to continue exploring these themes through Conrad.
As The Resident approaches the final episodes of the season, there are options for where Conrad’s story can go from here.
If Conrad is going to be center-stage, there is the opportunity for this character to explore a new romance with either Cade (Kaley Ronayne), who was a recent addition to the show, or Billie (Jessica Lucas), who was introduced as one of Nic’s closest friends.
Before the series can establish any new romances, however, The Resident is clearly going to explore Conrad’s grief in more detail and allow him to process it before moving on.
Wherever the story goes, hopefully, The Resident can give a fitting farewell to a character that was so beloved. Nic Nevins deserves nothing less.
