Left reeling by Q’s return, Jean-Luc struggles to make sense of the strange new timeline he finds himself in in Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 2, “Penance”.
When it seems that Picard and the rest of the crew of the refitted U.S.S. Stargazer is about to meet certain death at the end of last week’s episode, Q apparently somehow intervenes, throwing the group into an alternate timeline.
Though we didn’t see much of this new world in “The Star Gazer”, it certainly comes across as much more violent and less welcoming to non-human races than the traditional Star Trek world we’re used to. There, it appears that, while Picard is still a famous Starfleet leader, it’s because of his skills as a warrior. (Heck, his office is literally full of the skulls of his enemies!)
When or where Picard precisely is, what happened to the rest of the Stargazer crew, and how—of if—he’ll be able to set this timeline back to rights are questions only the next episode (or possibly the next group of episodes) of Star Trek: Picard can answer.
