Julia is Hollywood’s latest take on the beloved chef and television icon Julia Child.
The most well-known fictional on-screen depiction of Child is from Julie & Julia, where Meryl Streep took on the role of Child. In 2001, a documentary called Julia was also made about Child. Julia Child is such a revolutionary figure, especially in the food world, that there could never be enough content about her.
HBO Max’s Julia explores Child’s life in the 1960s during a peak time in her career, when her cooking show The French Chef was changing the course of American Television. The show also deals with pressing issues faced during that time, such as the women’s movement and the evolving landscape of television. Julia allows Julia Child admirers to dig deeper into the life, work, and spirit that made Child one of the most well-known chefs throughout America.
Sarah Lancashire, best known for her role on Happy Valley, plays Julia Child. Frasier’s David Hyde Pierce plays Child’s husband Paul.
The cast also includes Bebe Neuwirth, Brittany Bradford, Fran Kranz, and Fiona Glascott. HBO Max airs the first three episodes on March 31, and then episodes air weekly until May 5. There are eight episodes in Julia’s first season.
