Killing Eve Review: A Rainbow in Beige Boots (Season 4 Episode 3)

Killing Eve, Reviews

The final season is starting to pick up. Killing Eve Season 4 Episode 3, “A Rainbow in Beige Boots” proves that the series works best when all parts of the plot are working together towards a whole.

While the first two episodes of the season focus on the individual storylines, “A Rainbow in Beige Boots” hits differently, mostly because Villanelle and Eve are on screen together, again.

There are also a lot of supporting characters on this episode, but the way the story is written and the way the perspectives shift between different scenes help to guide the audience.

One of the most interesting characters is Pam, who Eve pegged early on as being someone that the Twelve would engage. Seeing her interact with her brother gives us a better sense of who she is and what she’s enduring. Her relationship with Helene is also telling, which helps the audience ground the story as a whole.

It’s easier to see that all these pieces are indeed getting us towards the same objective, but the final outcome is still uncertain.

Villanelle’s arc is one of the strongest of the episode. After killing the vicar and his daughter she is due for some change. Watching her seek out therapy and talk about how she wants to change but isn’t sure how is a big moment for Villanelle that she naturally goes about in all the wrong ways.

Adeel Akhtar as Martin, Jodie Comer as Villanelle – Killing Eve _ Season 4, Episode 3 – Anika Molnar/BBCA

Listening to her and Martin talk about how she wasn’t born a psychopath and how she can change is enlightening. However, the way she talks about Eve is the most interesting.

Martin makes a good point when he brings up that Villanelle could have killed Eve many times now. In fact, if you recall, Season 3 opens with Villanelle talking about how glad she is that her ex is dead. Yet, there’s always a relief that Eve is alive and well.

It’s not hard to see the attraction here, but it’s also not a good sign for their future. “A Rainbow in Beige Boots” seems to be doing its best to foreshadow the oncoming storm in the vaguest, but most interesting way possible.

Without a doubt, the biggest moments on this episode are when Villanelle and Eve share the screen. While it’s only a couple of moments it is enough to remind us of why we have watched the show for the last four seasons.

Sandra Oh as Eve Polastri, Jodie Comer as Villanelle – Killing Eve _ Season 4, Episode 3 – Anika Molnar/BBCA

The final scene where Eve mentions the fable of The Scorpion and the Frog is one of the best scenes of the series. After watching these characters continue to stab and shoot each other over the years, it’s refreshing to see someone say what we’re all thinking.

In speaking the truth, that they’re like the scorpion and the frog, I have to wonder if this spells trouble for our characters going forward.  Eve’s comment that they both die at the end feels a little foreboding. While I like the idea of Eve and Villanelle getting a happy ending after they vanquish The Twelve it may not be in the cards for them.

The fact that Villanelle has been arrested is a punch in the gut, but depending on how the rest of the story is handled it could work out very well for fans who want to see more of Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer on the same screen. (Yes, I am in that group.)

Anjana Vasan as Pam, Camille Cottin as Helene – Killing Eve _ Season 4, Episode 3 – Anika Molnar/BBCA

When all is said and done, “A Rainbow in Beige Boots” is the type of storytelling we want and need to see more of on Killing Eve‘s final season. It proves that these characters are at their strongest when they can play off each other and that they need to share the screen more.

Stray Thoughts:
  • I feel like Konstantin and Pam are going to get along great, but I also feel like Pam may kill him.
  • Fernanda is an interesting addition to the cast. I can’t imagine she’ll appear again but it was refreshing to see someone having fun with Eve.
  • Konstantin’s banter with the woman who brings him sausages is such a cute moment and the kind of storytelling that really lets Killing Eve shine.
