Pachinko’s Trailer Promises an Epic Family-Based Tale

News

At long last, Apple TV+ has finally released the trailer for its highly-anticipated historical drama Pachinko, which follows the story of four generations of a Korean immigrant family as their lives take them from Korea to Japan and ultimately America.

Based on the critically-acclaimed, bestselling novel of the same name by Min Jin Lee, Pachinko is a sweeping, emotional story told in three languages and spread across multiple decades. It is a tale of forbidden love and unimaginable loss, the horrors of war and the difficult peace that often follows after it, and how the choices we make today can reverberate through the lives of our loved ones for years to come.

Like the book, Pachinko follows the story of Sunja (played by Yu-na Jeon, Minha Kim, and Academy Award-winning Minari actress Yuon Yuh-Jung) at various points in her life as she grows from a young woman living in poverty in Korea to the matriarch of her own family, suffering through the Japanese occupation, religious persecution, and the fallout from World War II.

Unlike the book, however, it appears that her story will be directly juxtaposed with that of her grandson Soloman (Jin Ha), which takes place in America during the 1980s. (Lee’s novel tells the story of Sunja and her family in a much more straightforward, linear fashion, but to a certain degree, this decision makes sense if only to draw firmer parallels between their choices.)

The series also stars Lee Min-ho as Koh Hansu, along with Soji Ara, Inji Jeong, Kaho Minami, Steve Sanghyun Noh, Anna Sawai, Junwoo Han, Eun Chae Jung, Jimmi Simpson, and Yu-na Jeon.

Pachinko is created by The Terror‘s Soo Hugh, who serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
