Legends of Tomorrow Review: Too Legit to Quit (Season 7 Episode 12)

Legends of Tomorrow, Reviews

It’s time to hang up the flashers and time couriers on Legends of Tomorrow Season 7 Episode 12, “Too Legit to Quit,” as the team contemplates retirement.

This penultimate episode of the season feels very much like it could be a series finale — or, at the very least, a precursor to one. It’s a very quiet installment; the majority of it is characters considering and reflecting on whether or not they would want to go back to their times and places.

This is a tough thing to think about for viewers, even in oblique terms. There’s every possibility that this is a red herring or simply the writers attempting to wrap things up on their own terms on the off chance that the series doesn’t get renewed for another season.

There’s every likelihood that this could be a real and true ending, though. Perhaps this is the way that the show wants to go out and this is a conclusion to the series that was planned. No one wants to say goodbye, least of all someone that has been watching since the beginning and has been covering this show for four seasons.

If we are witnessing the beginning of the end, it would be hard to have too many complaints. Maybe it’s a little hokey and cheap but there is something very satisfying about seeing the trajectory of everyone’s lives.

There’s a nice exploration in the way that both the audience and the characters don’t want things to come to an end. It’s done in a way where none of the futures ahead of them are bad or even unwanted. It makes the case where, like with Zari 2.0 or Astra, you can want something for yourself without necessarily wanting it at that particular time or in this way.

This is, for all intents and purposes, only the first of a two-parter and as such it’s hard to glean too much that. All of this could be undone or end up not mattering in a very Legends of Tomorrow way.

It would be hard to be too critical either way because it is so heavy on the characters and is a sort of goodbye to them. That rings in our minds first and foremost. It feels a bit like David Tennant’s Doctor not wanting to say goodbye, even if it’s not a true one.

This series has always put such an emphasis on the characters and their emotional wellbeing and development being a central component to it and everything else comes second.  To focus on them now in this way feels sublimely perfect.

Ultimately, it becomes a question of how do you say goodbye in a way that feels appropriate and right to you. The team still doesn’t know and neither do we and maybe that’s okay, too.
