The Wonder Years Review: I’m With the Band (Season 1 Episode 12)
The Wonder Years Season 1 Episode 12, “I’m With the Band,” explores the trials and tribulations of competing in the school band and the pressures of impressing your parents. It’s an outing that gracefully and hilariously illustrates when a parent’s love might go too far.
Dean’s overzealousness regarding his mission to impress his father takes a sharp turn in this episode. Throughout this season, we see him idolize Bill for being “cool,” always having the correct answer, and expertly playing the saxophone.
KIM: I only play the cello because dad wouldn’t let me play the saxophone when I was your age. He said that’s how girls get pregnant.
But even our parents are flawed, fallible humans like us, striving to do their level best in a world that provides obstacles at every turn.

Bill’s quandary with seizing an opportunity that could propel his musical career to new heights, versus staying on as a professor because he’s close to receiving tenure not only showcases social class disparities but racial ones, too.
“I’m With the Band” subtly and artfully examines these nuances while offering up laughs aplenty and lighthearted moments.
ADULT DEAN: It’s as if Jesus came back as a saxophone.
This episode of The Wonder Years might resonate more with “band kids” of yesteryear. But it might also ring true for musical students today despite its heavy reliance on nostalgia. It’s a universal truth — band kids exude more confidence because music is their forte and this show brilliantly conveys that.

“I’m With the Band” also delves into the importance of carving an identity separate from your parents. As mentioned above, he spends a lot of time modeling himself after his father. But in “I’m With the Band,” Dean realizes he doesn’t want to pursue music with the same vigor as Bill, and that’s okay.
ADULT DEAN: There was blood in the water, and everybody in the savanna knew it.
Overall, this outing of The Wonder Years honors the show’s penchant for charm and comfort food warmth, with solid performances, multifaceted characters, and an endearing main character leading the charge.
“I’m With the Band” lovingly provides a nostalgia-steeped story of identity, choices, familial influence, and what not to do when you prank call your crush.

Stray Observations:
- If you played in the school band during your formative years, you understood all too well how cutthroat it could be when that sweet first chair position was on the line.
- Ah, prank calls — what kids did before the internet took the world by storm.
- Every youngster born before 2000 knows the struggle of being forced by their parents to greet every guest entering the house. Even if they’re friends of said parents.
- While a saxophone can’t biologically get a woman pregnant, it is the sexiest instrument. This statement is an undisputed, not-up-for-debate fact.
- Our parents are hard (not to be construed as abusive) on us because they love us, a concept we only begin to comprehend as we get older and have kids of our own.
