New Amsterdam Review: Talkin’ Bout a Revolution (Season 4 Episode 11)

New Amsterdam, Reviews

Viva la revólution on  New Amsterdam Season 1, Episode 11, “Talkin’ Bout a Revolution.” And thank goodness for Dr. Wilder.

Elizabeth infuses purpose into Iggy and Lauren’s veins and therefore into the halls of New Amsterdam. A revolution against Veronica is what is making watching her in charge bearable.

It’s also the highlight of New Amsterdam right now.

Max and Helen settling in London is sweet but boring. Max is too accomplished to be bumbling around London without a job for too long. Manhattan is where he is meant to be and whether he stays with Helen or not Max in London is such a waste of screentime.

“Talkin’ Bout a Revolution” proves this. England’s medical system may need some reforms, but the “American way” is not always the best way to fix everything.

It would be unique if New Amsterdam wanted to teach us about medical systems overseas, but a weak storyline that just calls out its flaws for the sake of matching an episode’s title is not the way to do that.

Even though the holiday season is over, year-round Santa, also known as Chris has the best storyline on the episode. His commitment to bringing other people joy is something we should strive for.

The scene where Chris and Iggy are talking and Iggy suddenly equates all of Chris’ strengths as Santa with a new perfect job showcases what a good therapist he is.

It’s also brilliant and absolutely hysterical that Veronica’s assistant is a secret Santa, even though the doctors realize this. This revolution is going to play out in smaller, well-planned acts which makes it more believable and worth rooting for.

That said, it is very disturbing that Drs. Bloom and Wilder perform surgery in a morgue. It’s a perfectly fine place to meet about a revolution and they are probably as sanitary as they could possibly be — but there is still something fundamentally wrong with performing surgery in a room full of dead bodies.

This brings us to Greg, and more specifically Mia. Greg, the “unlucky patient” is one of the oldest tropes in the medical drama genre.

But Mia intrigues me. First and foremost because holistic medicine does not seem like something Dr. Veronica Fuentes would welcome into her public hospital. So, the fact that she has cut other programs to find Mia’s salary is baffling.

I don’t like Mia as a person, but I do think that adding a holistic doctor brings a new, intriguing dynamic to New Amsterdam.

Lauren and Mia are also going to have quite a professional relationship to watch evolve and devolve and repeat the cycle.

I like Lyn, but a dynamic I’m getting sick of already is the one between Lyn and her men. This baby is going to change everything. What is the point of pretending like he or she isn’t going to rock everyone’s world?

The dynamic is too new, and the paternity test they insisted on getting before consulting Lyn proves that neither of her men can handle it.

New Amsterdam is relying on boring storytelling with Lyn’s health scare to tell this tale. It’s capable of better and has been this whole season, which is why I’m so hard on it.

But an hour with New Amsterdam’s doctors is never wasted.
