4400 Review: If You Love Something (Season 1 Episode 6)

4400, Reviews

It’s no surprise that the government knows more than they let on. 4400 Season 1 Episode 6, “If You Love Something,” puts some of the returnees in the center of the storm as they attempt to rescue Mildred and Noah.

It’s a big risk to pull of a heist like this so early in the season, but it pays off on “If You Love Something.”

Part of why it works is because of the returnee’s abilities we’ve seen so far. Hayden’s visions, LaDonna’s illusions, and Shanice’s ability to see memories are all working in concert to give the returnees what they need. It’s somewhat fantastical, but given that these people are supposed to be extraordinary, it’s believable.

Hayden is the standout on “If You Love Something” with his determination for getting Mildred back driving the story. The brief flashbacks we get of him in the 1930s with his mother also give us a bit more insight into what his story is, especially his distrust.

It is no wonder he would do anything to get Mildred back.

While Mildred and Hayden are the vehicle for getting to YPSI Medical, and behind the chartreuse door, it is the facility behind the hospital that is more illuminating.

The presence of this facility, where the government is keeping other members of the 4400 is not a shocking revelation to the audience. Since the beginning, no one thought that the government would just let them go.

However, we also know that the other returnees were housed in other facilities. While we’ve been following the returnees in this one hotel, it stands to reason that things didn’t play out the same way at other sites. While they have been able to keep their abilities a secret, maybe others haven’t.

The woman with wings and the lava man in their cells seem to be pretty extravagant cases, while our main characters have been able to fly under the radar for the most part.

Realizing that the government knows was a turning point that took two seasons to build to in the original season. The question going forward is going to be how can they get the story out there and believed by everyone else.

The video and press that have already made it to the general public have sown seeds of discord. It isn’t hard to see how some people may not mind the 4400 being locked up and experimented on. Especially since some may see them as a danger.

Mildred’s escape likely won’t help matters. Especially since, as LaDonna put it, she became Carrie at the prom.

How the 4400 are received by society is an arc that is going to take time. This is what makes the establishment of a sanctuary so important to the show’s arc.

Depending on how the tides shift, the 4400 need a place to go and claim sanctuary. While the Reverend has a flair for theatrics this can be of use when it comes to protecting the returnees.

Remember, as much as the characters within the universe have something to fear, we know there’s something else at work here. It is going to take time before this reboot reveals exactly what that is and the reasoning behind it, but for the moment we should be focused on the here and now.

Stray Thoughts:
  • Not gonna lie, my crystal-loving self was very happy when Mariah pulled out the pendant and gave it to Hayden as a form of good luck.
  • Anyone else wondering exactly who Mildred was talking about before she left?
  • Logan is surprising me, and I am honestly glad that he’s supporting Mariah and Hayden in whatever way he can. He may be more open-minded than I expected.
  • I’m a little worried about Keisha and Jessica’s relationship at this point, but I could also see Jessica as being a way into what’s happening at YPSI med. It’s hard to gauge her loyalty, but time will tell.
  • Andre’s ability doesn’t surprise me at all. I honestly expected him to have some sort of healing ability. Why it’s manifesting in this instance is anyone’s guess.
  • A USB drive that looks like pizza is always superior to a USB drive that just looks like a USB drive.
