Turner & Hooch Review: Lost and Hound (Season 1 Episode 10)

Reviews, Turner & Hooch

Turner & Hooch Season 1 Episode 10, “Lost and Hound,” is a chaotic episode, but surprisingly, it works. Most of the chaos comes from Erica’s frantic energy as she panics over Angel being kidnapped — a very reasonable response.

It’s been established that Erica being in an episode is always a good thing; she improves every episode she’s in. Her frantic energy around Xavier who is very out of it is one thing, but then there’s Scott who is trying to keep everyone calm and work the case.

A lot is going on with the team, and it all works. This chaos is the reason why “Lost and Hound” is so much fun. Each person brings something entertaining to the hour, and we also get to explore more of the relationships between everyone.

In addition to the people we’ve come to know and love, a brand new character gets added to the mix — Dixon.

Dixon could’ve just been a quiet prisoner, forced into going on this crazy rescue mission. Instead, almost instantly, he is a great source of humor, and he gets really into saving Angel. Criminal past aside, Dixon is a good dude.

Scott mentions at the end of “Lost and Hound” that Dixon decided to help out with their cyber crimes unit, so this better mean that he re-appears in the near future, which I’d say is a safe bet considering how much time we spend with him. A cyber crimes unit would also open up a whole new avenue of cases for Scott and company to take on.

Plus Dixon is such a delight that you can already imagine the hilarity that will happen if he assists on a case — Trent would hate him, and so I need them to interact. Also, Dixon and the chief would be quite the pair.

Turner & Hooch is excelling at putting together a top-notch ensemble. Hopefully, it gets a second season, so we can continue to explore and develop these workplace relationships.

The one aspect of the hour that doesn’t really work is the decision to follow around the brother and sister pair that bought the computers and Angel. It is almost as if Angel’s kidnapping doesn’t take up enough time, so the show had to fill the hour with a bit more filler, and that’s how we end up spending time with those two bozos around.

There’s nothing entertaining about the two of them. They aren’t funny, and we don’t gain any insight while following them around. It’s boring.

I’d rather we spent more time on Xavier. He opens up about his demons and fears to Olivia, and it would’ve been nice to circle back to that and focus on it a bit more. Scott checking in on him afterward would have been fitting since he spent a good bit of the hour trying to get Xavier to open up.

There’s really no reason why we had to follow around two random people when Xavier’s storyline is right there and could’ve benefitted from more time.

The best part of Laura and Scott’s investigation has nothing to do with their dad’s old case at all. It’s actually watching Scott and Laura interact and their sibling banter.

They’re a lot of fun, and we get to see a different side of Scott as Laura is forcing him to look at her new yarn board and make a promise to her. The two of them bring some heart to the hour

So, as long as there are some fun sibling antics, spending time working on their dad’s case isn’t all that bad. Turner & Hooch seems to have realized that this is the strength of the storyline, so it really leans into it and shies away from having the focus be on the investigative work.

Stray Thoughts
  • Hooch is barking at Brooke because he wants her to go away, right? Me too, Hooch.
  • Xavier being slightly off-kilter adds a good dose of humor to the episode.
  • I love how Laura gets upset at Scott for talking to her when he should be rescuing Angel.
  • Xavier and Olivia can’t move to Indiana. They are too fantastic to lose.
