Legends of Tomorrow Review: The Fungus Amongus (Season 6 Episode 15)

Legends of Tomorrow, Reviews

Legends of Tomorrow  Season 6 Episode 15, “The Fungus Amongus,” closes out the season with an alien invasion, a wedding, and more chaos than you can shake a stick at.

Upon retrospect, the season structure of this show has felt, oddly enough, very similar to the FX animated series Archer. There came a certain point where that show didn’t want to be about spies anymore and instead chose to be about smuggling and chose to keep reinventing itself from there.

Similarly, Legends of Tomorrow was very firmly a time travel series and then pivoted to focus more on mysticism and magic, finally with this season transitioning again to aliens. Some compared the season overall to Doctor Who and they certainly wouldn’t be wrong in that assertion.

It’s almost a premise season to a certain extent, like the show is telling us all season what it can do with access to aliens.

Naturally, “The Fungus Amongus” is the conclusion of that iteration of that conceit and it both works and doesn’t work, in nearly equal fashion. If anything, it’s a finale that is emblematic of everything that the series has been doing all season, both for good and ill.

The easiest place to start from is with Bishop. The episode highlights, and not to its benefit, just how ineffective of a villain he has been all season. It feels as if the writers only thought up that he is smart, evil, and created the Ava clones, and thought that would be enough to make an antagonist out of.

Those aren’t bad starting places but it lacks a lot of specificity. What ends up making him work as a force is the madcap performance that Raffi Barsoumian is giving and even that can only get you so far.

In a similar vein, this episode has shown just how haphazard Constantine’s storyline has been this season and his time on this show just ends with kind of a thud. It mostly feels the show just wanted a way for him to not be on the show anymore and this plot of him losing his magic and drinking blood is all they had to work with.

It all really does not flow well together and it doesn’t amount to a whole lot in the end. That is all fairly negative but “The Fungus Amongus” is otherwise a rather fun season finale as well as being a solid episode of Legends of Tomorrow .

Ava and Sara’s wedding and resulting “I do’s” is delightful and so utterly of this show, which is simultaneously dumb, chaotic, and outstanding. It’s the kind of plot twist that is both saccharine and completely up our alley where love is the thing that ends up saving the day.

There’s also the way in which this episode centers all of this around doing the thing that Sara explicitly would not do and it’s that one extra step of them screwing things up for the better. They’re messy and dumb and their methods even more so but sometimes that’s exactly what you need, a point this finale hammers home.
