Top 15 Moments from Van Helsing Season 5
Van Helsing Season 5 delivers everything and more as the series comes to an end, and our favorite characters work to defeat the Dark One once and for all. We are immediately thrown into the fire as the season kicks off with a time jump, forcing Jack back in time a few centuries.
The season gets more complex as it progresses and forces us to go through a wide range of emotions as new friends are made, and loved ones are lost. There’s love, death, reincarnation, unification, and so much gore; what’s not to love?
If you haven’t already binged the series last season, you should do so before continuing, as there are spoilers all throughout the article.
In chronological order, here are our top moments from Van Helsing Season 5:
1. Bathory the Vampire Hunter (Season 5 Episode 1)

Going back in time to the beginning of the Dark One is an exciting start to the season on its own, but Bathory’s past woven into the storyline is the best twist there is. One of my favorite things is getting to see origin stories of characters you might typically never expect to want.
Bathory’s origin story makes us look at the loathed character from a different angle as new information about her past comes to light. It makes our whole thought process about her change.
Until this moment, it’s believed that Bathory had always been on the Dark One’s side. But, in actuality, Bathory’s family plays an integral part in destroying the dark one. I love how in one season, this character that has brought nothing but pain and suffering can suddenly blossom into something new and unexpected.
Jesse Daniels brings a new twist to her character that we’ve known for the past four seasons and executes it phenomenally.
2. Jolene and Doc’s Happy Ever After (Season 5 Episode 4)

It’s upsetting that Doc, the woman who has been with Vanessa and Axel through most of the hard times in the series, is only seen twice throughout the last season.
I wish I could say I’m surprised, but she was treated the same way in Season 4 as well. I am thrilled, however, that she is seen again before the series finale came about, and she’s able to end it with a joyous moment.
Jolene and Doc’s reunion has been long-awaited since the end of Season 3 and has been one of the best-loved relationships on the show. Throughout the season’s Doc has been through enough trauma to last a lifetime, which makes her ending with Jolene that much more beautiful.
3. Mira’s Last Breath (Season 5 Episode 5)

Mira’s death hits different because her entire human existence after vampirism is spent in fear. Her fear of the darkness and being around Ivory caused her to be in constant torture, freezing up multiple times at the moment.
Her death makes me distraught because she sat and dealt with the pain of those feelings by herself before they became too much to bear. There’s been a lot of death on the show since the series began, but Mira decapitating herself is one that sticks with me.
It’s sickening that Ivory can’t remember killing Mira’s family and turning her, but it also showcases forgiveness’s importance. Mira couldn’t control her fear of Ivory or the images in her head, but she made it known she forgave her. The monster that did that wasn’t her friend.
4. The Last Sister (Season 5 Episode 5)

Ivory losing the last of her sisters is a challenging moment for her because they had been through so much together and were so close to beating the darkness. They all deserve a second chance at real life, but the Dark One is ruthless and forces them to kill themselves before they have the opportunity to experience it.
Mira’s death is the one that rips Ivory apart the most, and it’s visibly noticeable that something in her changes after that moment. The guilt of not being able to remember killing Mira’s family and turning her eats away at Ivory.
Ivory being the last sister is a monumental moment because it’s one of the first times she deals with genuine loss as a human. She’s learning to control the emotions that come with her human side, and I love that it’s not skipped over, allowing her to be vulnerable instead of hardcore all the time.
5. Violet Defeats the Vanator (Season 5 Episode 5)

Violet was made to handle greatness, which is well known, but this particular moment is the perfect way to showcase her power.
Thanks to Jack, the amulet contains a significant portion of the Dark One’s essence, so her willingly taking in the amulet is not a light decision. There was an enormous chance that the darkness could’ve compromised Violet, but she overpowers it and comes out victorious in the end.
Violet’s goal is to end the Dark One, but it feels like she’s proving a point in this particular moment instead of thinking logically.
Ivory and most of everyone else she knows has come in contact with pure darkness, but she hasn’t, and part of her feels guilty for it. So, her solution to prove that she can handle whatever’s thrown at her is to take the risk to defeat the Vanator.
Violet’s ability to overcome the darkness doesn’t change the fact that it’s a risky situation that could’ve potentially cost them everything.
6. Jack Makes History (Season 5 Episode 5)

Jack’s journey to the past to defeat the Dark One does not go the way she intended it to, but even in failure, she manages to succeed. Her thoroughness and bravery to save the village from the Dark One’s evil instills hope in the remaining villagers, allowing them to survive.
Jack’s fearlessness and persevering attitude is the backbone of what a Van Helsing should emulate, and she does it well. The creation of the Van Helsing name via Jack and it being passed down through the generations of Roma is the perfect reward for her courageousness.
7. Violet Becomes an Honorary Sister (Season 5 Episode 7)

Ivory makes Violet an honorary member of the sisterhood, which is a valuable moment because it’s actively showing how their relationship has evolved into a family dynamic. This is her way of inducting Violet into her family.
Ivory is very aware of all the stress and drama that Violet has to endure and knows the perfect way to relieve that pressure is screaming.
The sisterhood war-cry is something that Violet doesn’t know she needs, but after her initial cry, her emotions visibly come to the surface. All of the hurt, emptiness, and anger is released as she screams, letting it overtake her. It’s cathartic for Violet to let all of that tension and frustration out into the void instead of holding onto it.
Ivory sharing her war-cry with Violet bonds the two together forever, making the two of them an official family.
8. Jack’s return (Season 5 Episode 7)

Jack’s return is a surprise to everyone as it’s believed that she is lost to the past, living a life as one of the most excellent vampire hunters on earth. But, one thing that they forgot about Jack is she’s a Van Helsing, and death doesn’t come easy.
I love this because even though Jack doesn’t accomplish what she intends to by going to the past, she still comes out on top. Her ability to save the scroll from Bathory’s family is what makes or breaks all plans to defeat The Dark One, and without her, it wouldn’t be possible.
9. Julius’s Death (Season 5 Episode 7)

Julius’s death is one of the most heartbreaking moments throughout the entirety of Season 5. His sacrifice for Violet is one of the sweetest yet saddest events to happen, maybe on the whole series.
Violet and Jack may be the answer to vampirism and defeating the Dark One, but their relationship with Julius evolved into something much more than that throughout the past two seasons. Just like Vanessa, Axel, and Doc became his family, so did Violet and Jack, and Julius is known to do anything to protect his family.
Julius: I did good?
The only thing that upsets me about Julius’s death scene is the mannerisms portrayed before he faces his last fight. He’s standing beside Violet, ready to attack, when all of a sudden, her arm reaches his shoulder, and she tells him to “sic him,” as if he’s some rabid dog.
Julius is standing up for everything he believes in and sacrificing his life so Violet can continue her journey; the bare minimum of decency would be him not compared to a pet.
10. President Park Returns (Season 5 Episode 10)

President Park’s survival throughout the apocalypse instills hope in our favorite characters.
At this moment, it’s the first time that the thought of a life after vampirism seems possible. Park comes in handy as Jack and Violet realize he is the last stepping stone in the path to getting close to the Dark One and defeating her.
Without President Park’s survival, Jack and Violet’s chances of convincing the military inside the white house were slim to none, but he made it possible.
11. A Season’s Wait for Love (Season 5 Episode 12)

Ivory and Jack’s kiss is long-awaited as we fail to see the two of them have the time to reconnect on Van Helsing Season 5 Episode 7, “Graveyard Smash,” or the episodes leading up to Season 5 Episode 12.
The kiss on this particular episode is a special moment for the two of them because it’s also the anniversary of their first kiss, which happened on Van Helsing Season 4 Episode 12, “Three Pages.”
Their first kiss in Season 4 is instigated by Jack right before she leaves to fight the Dark One, but Ivory initiates their most recent kiss. Jack’s hesitation for her safety is an adorable moment as Ivory scoops her in her arms to assure her that she isn’t going anywhere, giving her a kiss for reassurance.
Sadly, instead of Ivory and Jack spending the rest of their life together in a semi-normal world, Ivory decides to go off on a journey of her own. Understandably, Ivory wants to seek out the rest of the sisterhood left after the defeat of the Dark One.
However, the decision to have Jack tag along is also right there and should have been implemented.
Allowing the two of them to get close before ripping them apart for good is treacherous and not something I will soon forget. The two of them deserved a happy ever after.
12. Bathory’s Death (Season 5 Episode 12)

Bathory’s death hits hard, especially for Jack, because in the end, she’s another victim of the Dark One and her treacherous ways. When Bathory initially tried to help vanquish the Dark One, she had her eyes slashed out, which followed over to her new human form.
Unfortunately, Bathory’s death is one that is seen coming due to her inability to form coherent sentences and see, but that doesn’t mean it’s right. In a perfect world, Bathory would be beside Jack and Olivia again, enjoying the life that was stolen from her so long ago instead of jumping to her death to escape the Dark One.
13. Axel’s Just Dues (Season 5 Episode 13)

Axel’s bravery and commitment to keeping Vanessa safe from the beginning of the rising to the very end is a testimony to the person he is and the character he possesses. He has laid his life down on the line in the fight to defeat the vampires an uncanny amount of times, never thinking solely of himself.
The restoration of the natural world would never have happened without his help, so his medal of honor via President Park is much deserved.
It’s nostalgic watching Axel’s storyline end right where it began, watching over Vanessa.
14. Olivia’s New Life (Season 5 Episode 13)

After centuries of being stuck in the Dark One’s body, it is only fitting that Olivia finally gets to experience a life of her own. She was forcibly ripped away from the love of her life and firstborn at the hands of Michaela and has been trapped for centuries inside of the Dark One.
Olivia earned her right to live a life at peace.
Tricia Helfer delivered what needed to be given and more with her portrayal of the Dark One/Olivia. Her ability to deliver in whatever role she’s in is unremarkable, and I can’t wait to see her chameleon-like skills on another show soon.
15. Sleeping Beauty Forever (Season 5 Episode 13)

It’s bittersweet that after everything Vanessa has been put through, she finally gets her chance at happiness. Her comatose state to secure the Dark One’s essence brings the whole show full circle to the pilot, where we first see Vanessa in the Van Helsing coma trick.
Vanessa deserves a happy ending after finally defeating the Dark One, and I can’t think of anything better than her getting to spend eternity with her best friend and daughter. I’m delighted that the show figured out a way to come up with a great ending without having to kill Vanessa off, officially.
Kelly Overton has excelled with her role as Vanessa over the years, and getting to watch her skills improve throughout the show is such a treat. Hopefully, her next project arrives sooner rather than later so she won’t be missing from our screens for too long.
