Burden of Truth Review: Breaking Points (Season 4, Episode 2)

Burden of Truth, Reviews

Joanna and Billy are running up against the clock to find Helen’s long-lost daughter while Taylor and Owen are searching for answers behind the attempted human trafficking on Burden of Truth  Season 4, Episode 2 “Breaking Points.”

Though the hour is short on answers, there are more than enough interesting questions to keep you entranced in the developments of everyone’s lives, especially when it comes to Joanna, Billy, and Taylor’s stories.

Joanna and Billy manage to track down Helen’s nephew, Charles, to save Helen’s property from Oro North’s land excavation. But things take a turn when Elyse gets to him before they get a chance to move forward.

Charles’ appearance and his choices set up some intriguing stakes for Helen and her family as we learn that the family’s been estranged for years after some doubts about his paternity. There’s a lingering sense that there’s more to the story that we’ve yet to see.

Will Charles’ story end with that waiting room conversation, or will we uncover more during the remainder of the season?

Joanna talking to a comatose Helen, while initially is about her case, veers towards the heartfelt as she chooses to be more open with her about their bonding over being an overwhelmed new mother. It’s a sweet moment that is heartbreakingly cut short as Helen codes.

You can’t help but feel terrible for both women as the depth of their friendship and confidence was so well done in Burden of Truth Season 4 Episode 1, “River City.” But this connection, viewers can see Joanna’s next move unsurprising as she is declared Helen’s new guardian.

But will Helen make it to see Joanna succeed in saving her farm?

It’s not all uncertainty, and somber tones as Joanna and Billy take on the task of reading to Cassidy. The fact that we continue to get these glimpses of domesticity and parenting from them is so sweet and feels well-earned for the pair. It continues to be a highlight.

Their moment of domesticity leads to a lovely, intimate proposal as Billy reassures Joanna that she’s a good mother and partner. While fitting for the pair, it’s incredibly short-lived and rudely interrupted by a surprising arrest: Joanna’s.

But Joanna’s arrest only leads to more questions about charges, the law enforcement agency behind it, and whether they are the ones that have been following her since the opening scene of the season.

While Billy and Joanna continue to uncover a new obstacle to their lives, Taylor’s trying to reach one of the girls she and Thorpe rescued from the van.

Taylor’s determination to uncover the situation behind that shipment leads to befriending one of the trafficked women. Taylor’s never one to back down from a challenge, so it’s not surprising that she steps up to the plate with Dee.

Your heart breaks for Dee and the situation she’s in, with an abusive boyfriend, a drug addiction, and her abduction. But with her hands tied and Dee making her escape, you can’t help wondering where it all ends for her and if Taylor will help her out of it.

With an arrest, a complication, and a getaway, things continue at a steady pace for Millwood.

Random Thoughts

  • The fact that Cassidy’s coming along on her parents’ investigation for a portion of it is interesting.
  • Owen’s struggles between his ties to the community and his role as police chief only grow throughout the hour as he tries to help. I look forward to seeing where Owen’s story continues and how he strikes the delicate balance between the job and the trust of his community.
